Sharing this helpful and thought provoking framework for helping us reflect on different aspects of diversity in the context of our practice - the Zones of Practice. Thank you to Rosy Hawksley who told me about it. There are three versions relating to (in particular order): 1. Neurodiversity-affirming practice (Kerry Murphy, 2023) 2. LGBTQIA+ affirming practice (RCSLT & UK SLT Pride Network, 2023) 3. Becoming an anti-racist (Andrew Ibrahim, 2020) I understand that the Zones of Practice framework originally emerged in response to the BLM movement. You can find all three versions via this link: https://lnkd.in/eQzS8qZt

Marsha P. Johnson: 'No Pride for Some of Us Without Liberation for All of Us' 🏳️🌈 Marsha P. Johnson's powerful words serve as a reminder that true pride and progress come from lifting each other up, hand in hand. Inclusivity isn't just a buzzword; it's a commitment to a brighter future where every voice is heard and valued. As a coach, I wholeheartedly embrace this message. My workshops are meticulously designed to build bridges and foster understanding among diverse individuals. We delve deep into the unique experiences of neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ communities, promoting acceptance and celebration of every individual's identity. In our collective journey towards liberation and equality, no one should be left behind. It's not just about some of us; it's about all of us. Together, we can create a world where pride knows no bounds, where every person is free to express their authentic self, and where diversity is our greatest strength. Let's continue Marsha P. Johnson's legacy by working hand in hand to build a more inclusive and equitable society. Your voice matters, and together, we can ensure that no one is left behind in our pursuit of progress and liberation. 🌍🌈 #InclusivityMatters #PrideForAll

This week, we join the world in celebrating Nonbinary Awareness Week! 🌈 As part of our commitment to inclusion, it's essential to honor and respect all gender identities. So, what does that look like in practice? Here are some ways we can make our learning environments more inclusive: ✨ Lead with your pronouns and ask others how they identify. ✨ Offer gender-neutral bathrooms in place-based learning settings. ✨ Use gender-inclusive imagery. ✨ Model gender-inclusive language. Instead of "ladies and gentlemen" or "men and women," try "guests," "folks," "friends," "colleagues," or "y'all." ✨ Use correct pronouns and accept corrective feedback graciously (no defensiveness needed – it’s all part of learning). ✨ Avoid gender-normed behavior expectations, such as associating colors or stereotypes with binary genders or forming groups by binary gender. ✨ Include diverse narratives in learning materials. Represent all genders equally in examples, cases, and context. ✨ Consider gender equity in characters, names, roles, and occupations within learning content. Remember, gender is a cultural construct. It's a socially constructed classification that changes over time and varies across cultures. Gender does NOT mean biological sex and does not indicate sexual orientation. Understanding and respecting this distinction is crucial for creating inclusive learning environments. When learners feel safe, welcomed, and seen, their engagement in learning significantly improves. By acknowledging and celebrating intersectionality, we can move beyond simply avoiding exclusion and towards actively creating inclusion. Psst...this principle applies to all forms of diversity. Let’s learn more about nonbinary and transgender identities together. Check out these resources. 🌈✨ It’s Pride Month ✨🌈 Hey y’all! I love being in a city like DC for Pride month. Out here, you see lawns and restaurants decorated in Pride colors and blown up unicorns on front lawns. The metro even get a makeover in Pride colors. You see people wearing Pride flags in their hair in every restaurant and museum. This is a city that truly comes to life during this month and it’s exciting to see the visibility of the community. It’s a stark contrast from my days on the school board where community speakers would unapologetically use homophobic and transphobic rhetoric to call for book bans and exclusionary bathroom policies. And those words had real impact as student groups would also show up to call for inclusive bullying policies that protected LGBTQ students as well as talk of the importance of creating safe spaces for students to find refuge from being dead named or harassed by peers and staff. It’s no secret that when LGBTQ youth have one affirming adult in their life, it reduces the risk of suicide. We also know LGBTQ youth face abuse and homelessness during the coming out process. So finding safe spaces is in fact life saving. June is more than a month; it’s a movement. Pride Month commemorates the resilience, courage, and unity of the LGBTQ+ community. It all began with the Stonewall Riots in 1969, a pivotal moment led by brave activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Their fight against injustice sparked a global movement for queer liberation. Today, their legacy reminds us that the fight isn’t over. Hostile policies and laws still attack the very existence of LGBTQ+ folks, creating unsafe environments that threaten their physical, mental, and emotional health. In these challenging times, queer inclusion and liberation are more important than ever. Let’s honor the heroes of Stonewall and continue their fight for a world where everyone can live authentically and safely. Together, we can create a future where love, acceptance, and liberation prevail. 🌍❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 #PrideMonth #Stonewall #MarshaPJohnson #SylviaRivera #QueerLiberation #LGBTQInclusion #EqualityForAll #LoveIsLove
