As an Aboriginal man deeply connected to my community, I've noticed a growing concern that I feel compelled to address. When individuals apply for Identified roles meant for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, yet don't associate with our community, it undermines the very purpose of these positions. Employers, it's crucial to ensure that candidates for these roles can genuinely connect with and contribute to our communities. One effective way is by asking for confirmation of Aboriginality. If an applicant can't get a vouch from an Elder, a respected community member, or their local Aboriginal community organization, then they shouldn't be considered for these roles. This practice isn't just about verifying identity—it's about ensuring that those in these roles have the lived experience and authentic connection necessary to truly represent and support our communities. It's disheartening to see opportunities meant for our people being filled by those who lack this essential involvement. I want to be clear that this message isn't directed at anyone specifically. However, it's time we hold ourselves and others accountable. Those in Identified roles should be immersed in and dedicated to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities they are meant to serve. Let's make sure these positions fulfill their intended purpose by empowering those with genuine ties and commitment to our culture and people.
