"Continuous... Development?" Modern software engineering needs simplification. A deep urge to simplify things is an opposing force to overengineering and technical debt. It is often missing, especially in legacy projects. But what does this actually look like? Can you apply it? Yes, simplification is possible! Especially if you think it is not. It may be hard to find good methods and fitting tools. It may take an amount of time which does not feel right. And this is actually an ongoing process that is never "done". But it's worth it. Modern engineering will enable you to build things faster. But even more, it will allow you to change things (fast)! And changing things is the best way to fit a solution to a problem (and not the other way around). - The Foundation: A CI pipeline that builds and checks things fast and robust. - The Enabler: Good tests which act as "value" specifications. - The Feedback: A CD process that keeps the creation live and alive. Simplicity is Key. But how? You just "do" your homework. Making things easy is not simple and takes a lot of time. Thinking ahead and taking the time to simplify things may seem unproductive at first. Yet, it’s worth it to think ahead and strive for a simple solution, always! I often have to invest 50% of my time in acquiring and curating new knowledge and tools. Sometimes, I even need 100% of my time to simplify and condense my work, so it doesn't end up as an overengineered mess. This applies to anything that is meant to provide value, here some examples: 1. Software development: Curating a powerful (and as simple as possible) software stack pays off. Learning modern practices (e.g. TDD, CI/CD, DevOps, GitOps) and understanding them enables robust and surprisingly fast workflows. 2. Working principles: Learn and utilize Kanban (the system, not just the board). Make your process visible so you can actually observe and improve it. Ask "why" (maybe hundreds of times...) to construct a critical path and focus on the value the work should provide. Any thoughts? How do you curate new knowledge or find ways to actually simplify things?
