Here are some of my thoughts on the #ClimateChangesEverything conference in September. Participating in it was definitely a highlight of my year. Thanks to all the people who believe in our work and have joined me in this adventure of restoring trust and hope in journalism. "Climate Justice Isn’t New I was honored to be invited to speak and facilitate. I had never been at a gathering of environmental journalists. I was excited that there was such dedication to discussing justice and the impacts of colonization. We talked about the ways it impacts journalism, namely obsession with the written word and academic expertise over oral histories and Indigenous perspectives. We need to work towards shared definitions of colonialism and climate justice so that they’re understood and used accurately in reporting on the climate crisis. In order for repair to happen, there needs to be a recentering of the ancient wisdom. It is so important to be in dialogue about this because it’s a global issue. I founded 9 Millones because I want to transform how we’re sharing the news. It can be lonely trying to do something different, but when we’re in conversation we realize we’re not alone. How we’re reporting is just as important as what we’re reporting, they affect each other. I left feeling inspired and motivated to keep going, which is so helpful as a founder. It reminded me of my 'WHY.'" https://lnkd.in/duhUWJds

As an environmental story teller and climate communicator, I recognize that its also my responsibility to tell narratives and stories ethically in the age of misinformation and narratives that can be damaging. Environmental Storytelling is where Journalism meets impact, it is with this background that I enrolled in this course. Environmental journalism and storytelling are two powerful tools that can work together to illuminate the complexities of our planet's health as well as contribute to its solutions. To quote Sir David Attenborough" The world is in trouble. Continents are on fire, gases are melting. Coral reefs are dying, fish are disappearing from our oceans – the list goes on and on… Saving our planet is now a communications challenge". Many other climate activists and enthusiast's sentiments underscore the importance of climate communication now more than ever. While journalism provides the foundation through investigative reporting ,uncovers environmental threats, holds polluters accountable, and keeps the public informed. It provides the facts and figures that give environmental stories weight. Storytelling then brings the issues to life using narrative techniques to connect with audiences on an emotional level. It allows us to see the human cost of environmental degradation and the power of solutions. Coupled together these make the best blend of climate communication that is routed in scientific facts and credibility while also packaging information that is people centered for meaningful impact. #climatecommunication #africaclimateaction #sustainabilitycreativesafrica #environmentaljournalism

📣 Have you taken our survey yet? There's still time to participate in our climate journalism research project with Deakin University, Australia! To mark EJN’s 20th anniversary in 2024, we've embarked on an ambitious research project, titled “Covering the Planet: Investigating the State of Climate and Environmental Journalism Globally.” Journalists and editors, we're inviting you to please share your insights with us. Tell us about the challenges and opportunities you encounter in your work, and give us your perspective on how the environmental and climate crises intersect with other global emergencies. We know people get asked to do a lot of surveys but this one is really important to us. So please do take the time to share it with your colleagues and networks, and of course, please fill it out yourself, too. It is available in 11 languages, and no long answers are required. We're collecting responses until December 15, 2023: https://buff.ly/3S05Kvc #research #mediaresearch #journalismresearch #survey #journalismsurvey #media #globalmedia #researchproject

My favorite takeaway from #OCJN: to look at climate as not a beat but an angle. Clearly, I’m still relishing my time from the second cohort. It continues to inform the kind of #climatejournalism I aim to do.

We probably agree: there should be more stories about climate in the media, more recognition that it crosses over with everything and the reporting should be better. Two years ago the Oxford Climate Journalism Network at Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism set out to do something about this. Having engaged 400+ journalists and counting, here's what they've learned so far... https://lnkd.in/eFXUUHKa

Decolonizing Climate Journalism! This week, I got an opportunity to participate in an interesting event organized by #GIJN. Climate journalists from different parts of the world were the speakers and participants. Among many interesting topics, one of the interesting debates around colonial reflections on climate journalism was quite interesting. Why the journalists from the developed countries have always to be the Key Analysts and the journalists from the #GlobalSouth have to provide information (they actually do the detail work) for the story whereas there are expertise on Global South as well and they are witnessing the climate crisis almost every day. Iam wondering whether it is high time to #decolonize #climatejournalism? #MatthewGreen, #SunitaNarain, #AmyWestervelt, #SheilaCoronel #GIJN
