Great article about the value of open-source software for society. As a contributor I can add: this holds particularly true for the field of artificial intelligence. Not only code but also foundational models that would be utopian to train for researchers at universities and smaller companies. Research pace in the field has constantly increased over the years by publishing the code (and this has been done not only by universities but also by companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and more … there is a value in it).
What can you save with open source software? This is a much-discussed question. A study by Haward has attempted to put an economic value behind OSS. The results are impressive: Companies would have to pay $4.2bn more per year than they do today if they did not have OSS to fall back on. The benefit on the consumer side is estimated at 8.8trillion$. If OSS did not exist, companies would have to spend an average of 3.5 times as much as they do today on software. Public Sector must acknowledge that value and support and fund further open source initiatives. Public Money - Public Code! https://lnkd.in/eY4X--Q7 German: https://lnkd.in/eH6E7mXv
