International Women’s Day is today and this year’s theme is Inspire Inclusion. Here is the Founder of The Equality Institute discussing the deleterious impact of patriarchy embedded in our systems, culture and institutions. Patriarchy is a rigid barrier to inclusion and without understanding and owning our unwitting biases and ties to patriarchal thinking, addressing gender equality and other harmful domineering ideologies will be difficult. As Dr Fulu says, for real change we need more than a morning tea, we need a paradigm shift in our culture. https://lnkd.in/gfP8JKQx

There is a growing awareness of the important role that male colleagues play in supporting gender equality. However, a study with male tradespeople in Nova Scotia reported that most men found it was difficult to be a catalyst for change and for an individual to stand out amongst their peers to support the change. So, what can leaders do to help men to support men as catalysts for change? Look at all these men spewing anti-women venom while their mothers, wives, female domestic help is cooking at home. Fact is, millions of women do carry their own luggage up and down, millions of women in the villages do 90% of the physical labour in the agricultural fields and also do the domestic work and their husbands do nothing. NOTHING. They play cards and drink. Look at all the women carrying firewood, water on their head and walking miles. If the family has tractors, the men drive it, while the manual labour is put in by women. And they don't even own the land. Look at a brick kiln or other construction site, women carrying tons of weight on their head. Millions of women live alone and nobody picks them up, millions of women drive on their own without a man giving direction, Google maps does that better. But data shows, not even 5% of the men in India do any household chores. Women cannot do physical hardship is the biggest lie peddled by patriarchy. So yes, next time men should make that tea and women should sit in the drawing room talking to the guests. Let's do that trade. Let's have all the men cooking at home in the evening after coming from work, and the women goes out to have some safe leisure time.
