The 2023-2024 Broadway season has officially come to an end and the Broadway League has released the stats. The season grossed $1.54 billion, slightly down 2.4% from the previous season, with 12.29 million admissions, almost unchanged from last year. Despite these positive figures, they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels from the 2018-2019 season, which saw $1.83 billion in gross and 14.77 million attendees. However, theater capacity was high at 89.63%, close to 2018-2019's 89.75% and higher than last season's 88.35%. There were 1,471 playing weeks, slightly fewer than the previous season, but attendance per playing week increased to 8,353 from 8,333. Springtime on #Broadway. Over the next month 15….count ‘em 15 more shows will open by April 25th in time for the #TonyAwards eligibility deadline. The overwhelming majority of them are musicals. Last year there was a similar rush to open. Overloaded awards nominators hussled from show to show, publicists pulled out the stops to get as much attention as possible for artists and shows in a suddenly crowded field. In a competitive landscape where audiences have not returned to pre-pandemic levels it seems like maybe this many shows…shouldn’t go on. There are many factors in when a play or musical opens on Broadway: show financing; which theatres are open; star availability and others. But this many productions obviously timed to awards eligibility only makes it more difficult for all of them to get a solid footing. It’s difficult enough for a show to survive on Broadway even with known material…here I am just a few months ago reporting from the #MarquisTheatre on “Once Upon A One More Time,” a musical comedy built around the songs of #BritneySpears. It cost millions to mount the show which closed after only 123 performances when it could not find a large enough audience. A tremendous amount of talent, hard work, and money has gone into each of the shows opening these next few weeks. No question, it is exciting to see this explosion of creativity and life on Broadway and I wish all of the shows success. How Hollywood Glamour Is Reviving the Endangered Broadway Play George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington and Mia Farrow are coming to Broadway, where some producers see plays with stars as safer bets than musicals. The pay on Broadway is not Hollywood-high, but it’s not bad — in commercial productions, stars are often given a negotiated base salary plus a percentage either of the box office or of any profit. As with everything on Broadway, finances play a role. The money risked by investors on plays is much lower than on musicals, which tend to have bigger casts, more elaborate sets, and, of course, musicians, and which have become increasingly expensive to produce. A new musical these days often costs more than $20 million to bring to Broadway — “Boop!” a new musical based on Betty Boop that is opening next spring, is being capitalized for up to $26 million. Plays generally cost less than half as much — the “Romeo and Juliet” revival is being capitalized for up to $7 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Of course, the potential upside is also lower. A successful play might return 30 percent to investors; the musical juggernauts (which are few and far between) can return many times that by sustaining long runs in large theaters and spinning off tours. (Of the 24 new Broadway musicals that opened over the last two seasons, only one, “& Juliet,” has become profitable thus far. Two others, “Hell’s Kitchen” and “The Outsiders,” have plausible paths to profitability, but it is too soon to know for sure.) Broadway had been on a remarkable upward trajectory in the years preceding the pandemic, but then tumbled; during the 2023-24 season, total attendance was still 17 percent lower than it had been the last full season before the pandemic.
