All eyes are on the UNSG's Critical Energy Transition Minerals panel this week👀 🤝 To help guide the UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, 210 Indigenous Peoples groups, unions, climate and environmental justice, child rights and human rights organisations have developed recommendations. 📜 We call on the UNSG Panel to adopt a transformative approach to transition minerals that contributes to a fairer world 🔗 Read the recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/dCDsw7it 🚨 In April 2024, UN Secretary General António Guterres launched a Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals to develop global principles to guide governments and companies. 🌍 🌐 This Panel has the opportunity to develop global principles to ensure that supplying the minerals needed to phase out fossil fuels don’t undermine justice, equity, and human rights. 🌱 To contribute to a just and equitable transition, those who extract and process minerals must respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples, communities and workers; protect water, biodiversity, and ecosystems across the world. 💧It is crucial to ensure producer countries and communities retain more of the value of resource development and see drastic increases in access to energy and fulfilment of all economic and social rights. 🗣️ The voices of communities, Indigenous leaders, women, and those with limited access to energy should be at the heart of these policies, including decisions on whether and on what terms extraction should proceed. Nous sommes ravi·e·s de vous présenter Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD nouvelle Directrice exécutive de PCQVP, qui prend ses fonctions aujourd’hui 🥳! Défenseure acharnée des droits humains, Ke a dédié sa vie à la lutte pour la transparence et pour la redevabilité. Elle nous vient de PCQVP Madagascar où, en 2020, elle a redynamisé la coalition et a renforcé le pouvoir d’action collective de la société civile pour se dresser contre la corruption, la mauvaise gouvernance et les abus dans le secteur extractif. Depuis lors, Ke a travaillé avec le réseau PCQVP pour réclamer justice pour les communautés riveraines de la mine de Rio Tinto/QMM; a contribué à plus de transparence dans la contractualisation minière à Madagascar, à travers la campagne #DiscloseTheDeal; a relayé la voix des communautés dans les espaces de plaidoyer mondiaux tels que les COP sur le climat; et a contribué au lancement de la campagne régionale collective #JustAfricaMinerals. A une époque où la gouvernance des ressources naturelles est au cœur des préoccupations mondiales, nos voix et nos actions importent plus que jamais! We’re thrilled to introduce Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD, the newly appointed Executive Director of PWYP, starting today 🥳! A dedicated human rights defender, Ke has spent her life fighting for transparency and accountability. Ke joins us from PWYP Madagascar, where in 2020 she revitalised the coalition, building the collective power of civil society to stand up to corruption, mismanagement and abuse in the extractive industries. Since then, Ke has worked with the PWYP network to fight for justice for local communities around Rio Tinto’s QMM mine, secure more contract transparency in Madagascar through the #DiscloseTheDeal campaign, bring their voice to global advocacy spaces like the Climate COP, and contribute to build a regional collective campaign for #JustAfricaMinerals. In an era where natural resource governance is at the forefront of global concerns, our voices and actions matter more than ever. We look forward to working together with our new leader to build a stronger movement towards a just, cleaner and fairer world where communities have a say.
