The Montana Mine Design, Operations and Closure Conference last week marked the first official event with Enviromin as part of RESPEC! Teams from our Montana offices participated as sponsors, demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship in mining operations. A special shoutout to Senior Environmental Scientist Katharine Seipel, who delivered an outstanding presentation on "Advances and Opportunities in Microbial Ecology of Mined Environments.” Her talk featured compelling case studies showcasing Enviromin's innovative work in achieving denitrification and sulfate reduction for our mining clients, making a lasting impact.

HSP2 Release Now Available on PyPI! RESPEC has released a new version of the Hydrologic Simulation Program–Python (#HSP2) model, our first official release on PyPI, the Python Packaging Index (https://lnkd.in/eA9xTQQ3). This effort is being led by an open-source team at RESPEC, along with a group of collaborators from LimnoTech, Geosyntec, and several others. In preparing for this release, RESPEC created a pilot HSP2 application from an existing, published HUC8-level #HSPF model. Our evaluation of the model results shows that HSP2 matches HSPF, within reasonable expected precision, for the entire model including flow, sediment, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients! Runtimes are similar or slightly better, and we anticipate ongoing efforts will provide significant improvements there as well. While previous efforts have shown similar results for test cases, this pilot is a milestone in showing agreement between the models using a full ‘real-world’ application. As part of this pilot, the HSPF GENER and basic Special Actions capabilities were ported over to the Python code and are now available in HSP2. HSP2 (HSPsquared) is a conversion of the HSPF watershed model code from Fortran to Python. HSP2 is open-source and is available on GitHub at https://lnkd.in/eK8ACmXj. Advantages of HSP2 include: - No limit on the number of operations - A migration path for legacy HSPF applications - Independent of operating system and hardware - Collaborative enhancement and maintenance - Freely available as an open-source model In short, HSP2 makes HSPF more accessible and ensures that a tool is available to assist in developing watershed-based approaches for protecting and restoring our waterbodies throughout the world.
