December and 2023 Round-up First thing's first, Happy New Year! I've just got back from a week of seeing family in Spain, so my batteries are fully recharged and I'm ready to get back into action. With my holidays and other things just before leaving, I didn't have time to get my December round-up ready for the end of the month, so here it is: ⚕️ Lots of medical translations from various clients, ranging from medical reports to clinical trial documentation. 🔎 Regular review projects of academic articles and clinical trial documents. 🎞️ Not much subtitling this month, but a few things from regular subtitling clients. 📄 I've had a few direct clients get in touch for various document translations (birth certificates, academic transcripts, medical reports etc.) 2️⃣ 0️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣ Looking back, 2023 has been a great year for me as a translator. I have a solid base of regular clients and often get contacted by new faces. I can also now say that the majority of my workload is in medical translation - although I still do get subtitling work through. A glance at my Notion database tells me that in 2023 there were: ☑️ Over 688,000 words translated/reviewed ☑️ Over 700 minutes worth of subtitling ☑️ 8 new clients It may not seem like much, but as they say, comparison is the thief of joy! I'm very proud of what I've achieved this year, and I'm grateful that I work in a field where I can learn something new every day. Let's see what's in store in 2024. 🥳 ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅ #xl8 #translator #litranslator #medicaltranslation #audiovisual

31st of May 🤯 This month has had some more subtitling work than usual, so it's been nice to work on non-medical topics. Here's what I've been up to: 🔴 Reviewing some brand-new content for Easy Catalan, due to be released soon! 🎞️ Subtitled a short film from Spanish to English about a man's experience of political imprisonment. 🔍 Reviewing content for a famous bookseller-turned-everything-seller 👀 🌺 Subtitled some Agricultural Engineering and Biology video content for a regular client. 💋 Did some subtitling and translation work on some adult material for an old client. ⚕️ My usual medical report work! 🏥 A large Catalan to English translation project of a hospital's 5-year strategy plan. 💊 Clinical trial documentation (which I've not had the chance to work on very much before, so this is a breath of fresh air!) After my post about CPD, I was given lots of great suggestions. So this month I've also started the Fundamentals of Medicine for Translators and Interpreters course on TranslaStars ⭐ (thanks Alexandra Craddock for the tip!) ✅✅✅✅✅🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 #xl8 #translator #litranslator #medicaltranslation #audiovisualtranslation

Experienced translator and writer with a Catalan heart, a Portuguese soul, and Spanish-American dual nationality
😃 What are you currently — or have you recently been — working on? I know there are still a couple of days left this month, but I'm ready to do my #MonthlyRoundup! TRANSLATION At present, I'm translating 15 files with instructions to fill out documents for public administration (English into Spanish). Before that, I worked on two English-into-Spanish communications projects for a collection agency and a Catalan-into-English high school transcript for a student. Of course, the rest was all about the medical field: • Adapting a questionnaire for a clinical trial from US Spanish into European Spanish • Translating from Spanish into English a total of nine files (lab reports, clinical trial protocols, EC approval letters, pharmacovigilance reports, and discharge summaries) • Updating an English-into-Spanish translation of an informed consent SUBTITLING I subtitled a 10-minute video interview for a marketing project (Spanish into English) and a 30-minute chapter for an upcoming series (Spanish and Catalan into English). Additionally, I started subtitling in English two videos totaling almost three hours, in which Edgar Amaya interviews his paternal grandmother in Spanish for genealogical purposes. WRITING I'm currently writing an article that is going to be published in one of the blogs of the American Translators Association. This month, I published the following articles on my blogs in English (EN) and Portuguese (PT): • [EN] New Service — Subtitling • [EN] Quotation Marks • [EN] Flags as Languages: Yay or Nay? • [PT] Lusofonia • [PT] Dia das Letras Galegas Including this one, I shared 27 posts this month here on LinkedIn, of which 21 were in English, 4 in Portuguese (one of those was also written in Galician), and 2 in Spanish. And that's all for May! I'm grateful to my clients and my network for all the good you bring into my life — may you all have a wonderful week and a great start to the month of June 🙌🏼. #LIsubtitlers #LItranslators #LIwriters #TheMedicalCommunicator

Translation vs Interpreting I can't count how many times I've watched films and TV shows where interpreters are referred to as translators. It's a common mix-up! When I mention that I'm a translator, people tend to assume I'm an interpreter. So imagine my delight when I was watching Ghosts the other day and Mike got it right 🙌 😃 Here’s the difference: ✍️Translation = conversion of written texts from one language to another. 🗣️Interpreting = oral or signed conversion from one language to another in real time. 🎬 And just to add a twist, there's also audiovisual translation, which is the conversion of audiovisual content from one language to another, e.g. through subtitling and voice-over. Most translators are not interpreters. The two professions require different skills and training, so it's important to hire the right people for the right jobs. Who else has encountered this mix-up? 👇 ----- 👋 I'm Megan, an Environmental Translator and Subtitling Specialist. 🇧🇷🇪🇸🇫🇷 Portuguese, Spanish & French to English. 🇬🇧 Need help captivating English-speaking audiences? 📧 I’d love to hear from you! meganoneiltranslations.com [email protected] #Translation #Interpreting #Subtitles #AudiovisualTranslation

Experienced translator and writer with a Catalan heart, a Portuguese soul, and Spanish-American dual nationality
“Based in Porto. Trained in Salt Lake City and Chicago. Raised in Barcelona and A Coruña. Born in Zaragoza.” That ⬆️ summarizes my life. It’s also one of the reasons I create or adapt content in four languages — Catalan, English, Portuguese, and Spanish. 💡 So, how can I help you? I draft and edit texts in the above languages, but you must consider the following preferences of mine: • Writing in Catalan, English, and Spanish is easier than in Portuguese. • Translating into Catalan and Spanish is easier than into English and Portuguese. Additionally, it’s not all about written words: • Audio — Transcription (verbatim or edited) • Video — Subtitling (open or closed captions) When it comes to the audiences and the language varieties they speak, these are my choices: • Catalan (Catalonia) • English (US) • Portuguese (Galicia and Portugal) • Spanish (Spain and US) Last but not least, I specialize in medical and medical-related documents, such as: • Clinical trial protocols • Educational and marketing materials • Health care agreements and policies • Informed consent documents • Market research • New drug applications • Patient forms, instructions, and records • Premarket submissions for medical devices ☝🏼 Nonetheless, I didn’t become the professional I am today just by learning languages and living in different countries. I’ve been facilitating communication since 2004. Additionally, I’ve been investing in continuing professional development since completing my licentiate in Translation and Interpreting (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2010). That includes the following programs: • Master’s in Medical Translation (AulaSIC) • Medical Interpreting Certificate (MITS) • Medical Writing Essential Skills Certificate (AMWA) • Regulatory Medical Writing Series (RAPS) Finally, in 2017, I passed the ATA Certification exam (English into Spanish) — one of the industry’s most respected credentials for translators and the only widely recognized measure of competence for translation in the US. 💬 Whether you’re looking to hire or contract, I’m happy to discuss your needs with you! #MedicalTranslation #MedicalWriting #TheMedicalCommunicator

Award-winning Polish translator, subtitler & speaker | inclusive language and sustainability | English between Polish | Spanish and French into Polish and English
When was the last time a LI comment actually offended you? I recently commented under a subtitler's post and then saw another comment. The author claimed that: 🙄 subtitling can be learnt in half an hour 🙄 specialising is an obsession – a translation is a specialisation in itself 🙄 translation is not a 'whole profession' but a craft... They also said that translation is a passion for them and that they can produce a text of a quality that very few translators could achieve. Ugh. Let me explain a few things: 😏 Subtitling, just like many things, can't be learnt in half an hour. You can get a grasp of it, but that's it. 😏 Would you tell a medical doctor or a lawyer that specialising is an obsession? Didn't think so... 😏 Translation *is* a profession, one that plenty of people depend on for putting food on the table. It's great that there are people passionate about translation. Unfortunately, treating it as a side-job or a hobby can create a few issues for professional (yup, you heard me right) translators: 🤔 Professionals depend on translation as their source of income, so good rates are a must for them. This is not necessarily the case for hobbyists. This can have a detrimental effect on those of us who don't treat this job as a passion project. 🤔 Since anyone can translate (or can they?), how do we ensure clients don't lose their trust in our profession? This is my face when an unprofessional translator claims their skills are better than a professional one's: #LITranslators #Subtitling #Translation

Freelance Translator | English, Spanish, French > Italian | Marketing, Travel & Tourism, Education, Subtitling, SEO
"Oh, you’re a translator! That is so difficult! As I speak 2 languages, I find it so hard to “translate” when my friends ask me to do so because they don’t understand what’s being said! You must be quick and remember it all!" This is what I was told last week by a Dutch girl who speaks Dutch and English and has many international friends, who often ask her to “translate” what Dutch people say in real-time. But this is not a translator’s job! I often meet outsiders who think I “translate” oral speech simultaneously as part of my everyday work life. And maybe this is the most common misbelief about the translation profession. JUST TO MAKE IT CLEARER: - translators: their output is written text; - interpreters: their output is oral or signed. And I prefer to focus on output rather than input, as audiovisual translation may pose a further challenge for those struggling to understand the difference between the two professions (e.g.: even when translating for dubbing, the translator’s direct output is a written text; and even when interlingual subtitlers have to work from the audiovisual input itself, without any script, their direct output is written text as well). #translationservices #translation #interpreting #litranslators #freelancetranslator
