Putting the child before the curriculum does not mean doing away with the latter as some could have mistaken. A curriculum is the arrangement of experiences and learning as defined by an organisation’s purpose. Even in families, parents have a ‘curriculum’ of what they want to do and how they wish to raise their children. A balance is to be struck between what adults want to do and what children wish to learn. This applies equally to parenting and schooling. There is a space for a combination of curriculum and the child’s right to choose and grow. Afterall, all curricula seek to prepare children for the future. And the only guarantee to be future ready is to continue learning. Fortunately, our children are born with this learning trait. So use it properly and nurture it with kindness for the whole child.

Our ACT public schools all teach to the latest version of the Australian Curriculum (v 9.0) from kindergarten to year 10. The Australian Curriculum outlines what all students should learn as they progress through school – regardless of the school that they attend. Our teachers spent 2023 learning about the changes to the curriculum through training, mentoring sessions and workshops, as well as in lesson planning in readiness for the 2024 school year. As this has occurred we have also updated our website to provide more information about how we teach in ACT public schools. ACT public school teachers use a range of teaching and learning practices designed to meet the individual needs of all students. Across every school, teachers are planning, delivering and assessing learning every day. Student learning data is used to identify what each student needs, informing the learning and teaching strategies required to meet each student’s need. Teachers and staff across our schools are committed to making sure students are empowered as active participants in their education in all curriculum areas, and to ensure that they can be active and informed citizens in the future. We will continue to provide information and resources for families about learning and teaching in our schools this year both through our website, on social media and in school newsletters. Find out more about the updated curriculum, as well as how we teach and learn in ACT public schools, here: https://ow.ly/tbGk50QLh8p

I think all kindergartens, primary and secondary education systems of the underdeveloped and developing countries should incorporate life skills such as cleaning, cooking and other household chores in their school curriculum and then articulate and implement it in a safe and ethically accurate manner. Having done this will prepare the kids and children to live happily in any complex situation and life as our world is changing rapidly and implementing these practical life lessons help children become independent and resilient. Learning by doing and active learning is something that past and contemporary education thinkers put forward and advocate for as they experienced, experiment and wrote extensively about it. Today's children in schools (K-12) prefer and prioritize hands-on activities and active learning over lengthy explanations and lectures which do not include practical and learning engagement activities

Are you considering taking your child's education into your own hands? 🤔 Homeschooling and distance learning can provide an incredible education that allows you to create a curriculum and routine that puts your child's needs and interests first 🙌 Wondering how you get started? As a parent/guardian in the UK, here are some tips to help you make the transition from school setting to home education: 🔴 Find out the requirements - It's important to be aware of any legal requirements that concern homeschooling your child. Gov UK state: "You must make sure your child receives a full-time education from the age of 5, but you do not have to follow the national curriculum. The council can make an 'informal enquiry' to check your child is getting a suitable education at home" 🔴 Inform the school - Once you have decided to homeschool your child, you must inform the school by sending the headteacher a deregistration letter. This letter is to inform the school of your plans to educate your child from home full-time and the specific date you will be starting this. 🔴 Find resources that work best for your child - Will your child be taking national exams and what qualifications will they be working towards? Take the time to research different exam boards and course materials that will best suit your child's needs and interests. 🔴 Create your curriculum - Now that you have a better idea of what you want your child to be learning, create a curriculum that will work best. Consider subjects, when will exams take place, how will lessons fit into to your schedule? 🔴 Start your child's educational journey! Still considering homeschooling your child?
