Our CEO Kim Lundgren and Director of Climate Analysis Mike Steinhoff have spent decades in the local climate action and implementation sphere - and the field has rapidly evolved in that time. In their most recent installment of #TalkingAction, Kim and Mike talk about the lessons they've learned throughout their careers, what parts of the playbook they've left behind, and how they see climate action developing in the future. https://hubs.ly/Q02v97pH0 #localgovernment #climateaction #climatechange #inflationreductionact #epa #sustainability #climate #localgov

This testimony happened when I was two years old. I grew up and became an environmental scientist, and have been looking at this issue one way or another, from a variety of different perspectives, for almost twenty years. This is the first time I have seen this testimony in full. It is remarkable in its brevity, conciseness, and insightfulness. We all know why we are in the situation we are. A reluctance to adapt. An inability to admit when we are wrong or that someone else has an idea worth adopting that you didn’t come up with first. A pursuit of political influence and financial gain at the expense of others and through active suppression of knowledge that might risk the selfish pursuit. A loss of community consciousness and resolve. Closed, narrow minds. Egos. The most dangerous people on our planet right now are the people with power and wealth who refuse to change as the world turns. I’m reminded of the book “Collapse” by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Jared Diamond. In it, he presents the insight that the common thread that determines whether human civilizations succeed or fail is whether its leaders and its culture are able to adapt to changing physical environments. Unfortunately, those historical examples are mostly of island civilizations where the stakes were relatively local, and not an existential threat to our entire species. Our planet is one big lonely island in an ocean of vacuumous space, with the nearest habitatable planet light years away. Our society’s billionaires’ little space tourist rocket projects are laughably inadequate and impotent to be the ships that will find new worlds as time runs out. Don’t be like them. Be like Carl.

There needs to be enough money in the annual budget for climate action. That has to be at the top of the agenda, because right now it isn't. - Anuna De Wever #YouthDay #YouthLead #Youth4Climate
