Urban Grid is excited to celebrate World Bee Day today! 🐝 Pollinators, such as bees, are under threat from human activities and civilizations. This is a growing concern for our food security, given that 75% of food crops and 35% of global agricultural land rely on them. Specific agrivoltaics programs allow for solar fields to become a unique habitat for pollinators and honeybees! This is an incredible example of how our industry can help to mitigate some of these concerns. Our organization understands the impact that bees can have on our ecosystem and is proud to be integrating agrivoltaics programs into our current and future projects. #worldbeeday #savethebees #beekeeping #agrivoltaics #sustainability Photo Credit: Siller Pollinator Company LLC.

🐝🌻WORLD BEE DAY🌻🐝 Pollination is a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Honeybees are a primary pollinator of plants, including crops, fruits and vegetables. Our diets rely greatly on the work that bees do – in addition to the honey and wax bees produce themselves. We can all do our part to help save our little pollinator friends: 🐝plant a diverse set of native plants which flower at different times of the year; 🐝buy raw honey from local farmers; 🐝buy products from sustainable agricultural practices; 🐝protect wild bee colonies when possible; 🐝make a bee water fountain by leaving a water bowl outside; 🐝help to sustain forest ecosystems; #landscapeacademy #worldbeeday #worldbeeday2024 #sustainability #sustainabilitycourse

Using systems and long term thinking to provide commentary, research, analysis, and stakeholder engagement for future proof solutions in policy and practice with multiple environmental, social and economic benefits.
Great to see this. We need a more balanced conversation on what the future of farming really looks like. Planting trees at this scale won't be the right thing everywhere of course, it will depend on the land. And where we are planting trees, or reducing our grazing intensity to allow natural regeneration, lets be clear what we are talking about. There is a very big difference between a closed canopy coniferous plantation, and native trees spread sparsely over a hillside where grazing can still occur and is a crucial component (whether domestic or wild grazers). Such as in Ffridd or Coed Cae (wood pasture/field trees). We need to talk constructively together to ensure the best options work in each place.
The reality of modern farming rarely matches the bucolic vision the adverts try & sell us. It’s clear that not all farms are gently rolling sun bathed green fields & in many cases managing difficult terrain can make tree planting a more desirable & useful outcome. Tom’s farm in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park is a great example. He’s managing the future viability of his family farm & adapting to a changing climate and by finding new ways of generating value from some of his land. Part of this evolution is working with Stump Up For Trees to help create a woodland pasture on a steep stretch of hillside that’s increasingly untenable to manage as grazing land for rearing lamb. Critically, this is not good agricultural land. When complete, Tom’s new woodland will comprise of around 24,000 trees (all native species) that will promote biodiversity, improve water management, reduce soil erosion and sequester CO2 as it grows. General Manager at Stump Up for Trees and Facilitator in interdisciplinary knowledge sharing for landscapes
Upland Coed Cae restoration, with and for the farming community. One of our landowners interviewed by one of our brilliant volunteers. A really interesting conversation that needs to be had more broadly - where are trees both ecologically, economically and culturally suitable within the farmed landscape. Sensitive low-density planting, reinstating Coed Cae (wood field) within the landscape, where lower stocking means that bracken has taken over, is a key woodland creation win. Stump Up For Trees and Robert Penn will be writing a lot more about this, and about this site in particular. But if you've any questions about the benefits or even the 'Trees vs (pick your target)', please do ask me! The multiple drivers, and the extensive work that went into planning and developing this project (Thomas didn't get a chance to talk about the months of planning that went into this), make this a really interesting project to look at different factors can complement (rather than compromise) each other when increasing tree cover in our landscapes. #woodlandcreation #ecology #biodiversity #planning #conversations #climatecrisis #naturecrisis #farmingforthefuture #food

In regenerative farming, we're taking steps beyond traditional methods to grow our Rå fruits. Our farms pair crops with native plants, creating a diverse habitat that's ideal for pollinators like bees and birds. This approach not only enriches the land but also ensures that we grow our fruits in harmony with nature. By relying on natural predators rather than chemicals for pest control, helping maintain an ecological balance. This leads to berries that are not only more flavourful but are also grown in a way that's better for the environment. When you choose Rå, you're supporting a method that benefits the planet and provides you with naturally delicious fruit. 🌏 📸 From our farms in Chile #BiodiversityFarming #HealthyHarvest #PlanetFriendly

🌱 Let's talk about a secret to protecting your pollinators that might surprise you! 🤫 Did you know that you should be waiting until temperatures are consistently above 10°C before you clear up your garden? 🌡️ 🌈 That's because many beneficial insects and organisms make a home in the debris of a winter garden. By leaving it be, you're creating a haven for these little helpers, promoting a healthier and more vibrant ecosystem. The layer of leaves and debris you might think makes your garden look mucky acts as a natural mulch, providing insulation for your soil. It helps regulate temperature, retain moisture, and prevents soil erosion. Nature's own protective blanket! So say no to overzealous raking and clearing too early, to protect overwintering insects and emerging perennials. Give your garden a chance to rejuvenate at its own pace. Patience is key! 🏡 We've been working with multiple organisations to help them increase their positive impact on biodiversity, and our Polly insect listening devices give them access to the hard data to understand their pollinators, and prove their work has impact. Find out how you can get involved here: https://www.agrisound.io #WinterGardening #NatureLovers #GardenWisdom

🌱 Can we turn back the tide of industrial farming? 🌳 This is the story of the Nam Tien Reservoir in Sayaboury Province, where once lush forests thrived, providing habitat for diverse wildlife and sustenance for local communities. But over the past decade, the landscape has drastically changed. 🚜 Hundreds of hectares cleared for foreign investors' crops have replaced natural vegetation with banana plantations, melon fields, and cassava farms, posing a threat to species like elephants and the livelihoods of local people. 🌍 The Wyss Academy, alongside its partners, is leading efforts to restore the Nam Tien Protection Area. Through data collection, stakeholder engagement, and tree nursery establishment, they're paving the way for a greener future. Can we ensure that restoring the forest also restores local livelihoods? It's a question that demands innovative solutions and collaboration between communities, governments, and researchers. Yesterday was World Honey Bee Day, but the importance of these incredible pollinators extends far beyond a single day! #DidYouKnow honeybees are vital to our food system, pollinating around 75% of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts grown in the United States? Their pollination activities are essential for the production of crops like almonds, apples, blueberries, and cucumbers. Beyond agriculture, honeybees play a key role in maintaining biodiversity within ecosystems, supporting the health of the environment by ensuring plants and wildlife thrive together. Back in 2006, one of Solutions from the Land's first initiatives focused on exploring how native pollinators could supplement the pollination services provided by managed bees, ultimately increasing on-farm productivity and profitability. Today, we continue to emphasize the importance of pollinators—both managed and native—in all agricultural, environmental, and climate-focused conversations. How are you supporting pollinators in your community? #WorldHoneyBeeDay #SaveTheBees #SolutionsFromTheLand
