Congratulations to our Small Communities, Big Challenges Prize Competition winners! Local governments are on the frontlines for working with rural communities on environmental public health issues. To gain a better understanding of environmental and public health challenges facing rural communities, EPA and our partners launched the “Small Communities, Big Challenges” Competition. The goal of this Competition was for local governments to identify innovative and effective ways to holistically engage rural communities around environmental health issues and to identify any associated barriers to better protecting human health. Our Assembly has a lot of faults and we all need to accept the Executive’s role in the deteriorating situation on Lough Neagh. But shouldn’t our democratic institutions be using their power to convene leaders, scientists, public health experts and those who use the Lough every day to put together a rapid recovery plan? Easy to think this is a stunt to put pressure on the DUP - it isn’t. It’s a serious acknowledgement that we can’t face this fight alone, we need to pull together the political, technological and scientific expertise to throw the Lough a lifeline. The current ENVI Committee's structure and the 'One Health' scope are crucial for effective environmental 🌍 & public health 🩺 policies. Tackling major health threats like antimicrobial resistance, climate change, (re-)emerging zoonoses, and air and water pollution requires an interdisciplinary approach recognising the connection between the health of people, animals, plants, and their environment. This is why BEUC sent a letter to 10 of the ENVI Committee's members, including the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, urging them to keep the current structure. https://lnkd.in/eP59MZ7i
