In an article published by ALNAP, our Systems Change Specialist, Scott Hinkle explains that even the most complex systems can be shifted. Individuals and teams beginning to do just a few things differently can ultimately lead to meaningful change. But where can organisations start? ➡ A mindset of small tweaks over time: Change can be incremental rather than monumental. The world typically evolves gradually until circumstances align, prompting bursts of change within systems. ➡ Work with practical entry points: This operational approach relieves pressure and makes change easier by allowing us to identify key starting points, or ‘windows of opportunity’, where we can begin working differently. Additionally, Scott urges organisations to enable adaptive teams, prioritise learning, identify institutional barriers and believe it can be different ultimately to make progress towards change. Managing and implementing change within organisations has become even more important today than it has been in the past. This is especially true due to some of the recent changes in technology and the impact it is believed that this will have in the future on the traditional elements of people, processes, data, and technology. While there is a lot of research available, as well as books, talks, and other materials regarding change and how to manage it, for most organisations changes fail and result in lost time, productivity, and financial resources. Change is something that I am passionate about and believe if managed correctly can have significantly beneficial results for any organisation. To this end the guidance of Scott Mautz on seeing change as a path that will lead the organisation to a better future and not as a process, I believe, is a great way of starting any change. By ensuring that employees understand where they are now, where they need to go and why, any negative consequences of the proposed change, and the positives of the change will then result in your change being a lot more likely to be successful. #technology #research #people #productivity #change #future

Tonight, I read an article by Professor Joe Peppard titled ‘The conundrum of IT management’, which I found very interesting. I highly recommend reading it. Below is a brief summary of the article. IT management has been portrayed and managed as an island for too long, with many IT functions physically located away from the main business sites. However, the role of IT in business has evolved and become fundamental to not only business operations but also to the achievement of corporate strategy. Delivering business value through IT is a knowledge-based endeavor, and the knowledge required to generate business value through IT is distributed throughout the organization. This presents a challenge for the CIO for its integration and coordination, as the knowledge is not located solely within the IT function. While most initiatives and practices that organizations engage in to improve the contribution of IT are focused on achieving access to knowledge, this is not sufficient. Knowledge requires integration, and bonding within teams and workgroups and across the organization. The challenge for the CIO is to mobilize the social capital underpinning each of the competencies, which will require a variety of initiatives that support both bridging and bonding. IT is not an island, but a part of the mainland, and generating value through IT requires acknowledging this fact and mobilizing social capital. https://lnkd.in/eN-QBdtr

For those impacted by change, it is more important to successfully communicate the need for change and how this perceived opportunity can have a positive impact to improve their efficiency and function. Exposure to evidence that led decision-makers toward proposed solutions will support the employee’s independent assessment of appropriateness, support, and valence.
