This is a lovely fragment from the Guardian article about hosting refugees: "Our motivation to host refugees? Six reasons. One: we are Jewish, and our families were refugees long ago. We thought it was time to pass the baton. Some of the stories the refugees tell us about crossing countries in dangerous conditions are worryingly familiar. Two: we have children and would like to think that if they were stranded, there would be a safe place for them. Three: we are empty nesters with a lovely house and garden in a good and convenient area. Time to share it. Four: having a youngster around is a breath of fresh air, it makes you flexible, since [as you get older] you get set in your ways. Five: we are curious. Hosting is a good way of learning about completely different cultures. Having an Eritrean farmer around, for instance, was fascinating. Event Takeaways: Building Resilient Community Sponsorship Programs in Europe and Beyond 🌍    Explore the key takeaways from the "Building Resilient Community Sponsorship Programs in Europe and Beyond" event organized by the European Commission, European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA, and The Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative (GRSI), held at the Mission of Canada to the EU in Brussels on October 12-13, 2023.    The event aimed to advance community sponsorship of refugees globally. The key highlights include:     1️⃣ Global Refugee Crisis: With new crises emerging worldwide, from Afghanistan to Ukraine, the number of displaced people has exceeded 110 million in 2023. The burden of hosting and protecting refugees remains unequal, with some countries bearing a major share.    2️⃣ Policy and Operational Innovations: Despite challenges, there have been significant innovations in community welcome and sponsorship. Panellists discussed formal and ad-hoc sponsorship arrangements developed in Europe and beyond.    3️⃣ Sustainable Solutions: Participants emphasized the need to ensure that lessons learned from recent crises inform the development of sustainable programs for the future, rather than being limited to immediate responses.    4️⃣ Workshop Discussions: On the second day, participants engaged in workshops focusing on key thematic areas such as housing, partnerships, education, and labor pathways.    This report provides an in-depth overview of the discussions, capturing diverse perspectives and highlighting strategies for building resilient community sponsorship programs.    https://lnkd.in/d7TnD242

The United States is uniquely positioned to welcome forcibly displaced people from around the world, and the church is called to be the hands and feet of Jesus to refugees and asylum seekers.
