More than 117 million people were forcibly displaced at the end of 2023 as a result of war, violence, human rights violations, or political, ethnic, gender or religious persecution, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Our team recently developed a new resource, “In Their Own Voices: A Manual for Inclusive, Victim-Centered Documentation and Memorialization of Forced Displacement,” to support civil society organizations, activists, survivors and others as they work to counter negative stereotypes about forcibly displaced people; establish clear and truthful records of the violations that they have faced; and work to hold perpetrators formally accountable. 🤔 Next Monday, August 19 is International Humanitarian Day when charities and other organisations come together to advocate for the survival, wellbeing and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. ❓ Why should you care? 🌏 The world is a small place - a remote link-up can put you in touch with someone right on the other side of the globe in the blink of an eye - and we are all global neighbours. We rely on the resources of other countries, we welcome the skills of people from other countries, we travel for holidays in other countries. 😪 And we watch in horror as humanitarian crises unfold: innocent people lose everything in wars; children starve to death in droughts; farmers struggle to survive in the face of extreme weather. ⌚ We all have stuff going on, which means we don't all have the inclination, the funds or the time to devote to a cause but for those who have a few minutes, especially on Monday, August 19, spare a thought or a prayer, perhaps a couple of coins, or maybe find some spare time to help a charity (like Christian Aid). It's the little things. 📋 Saying a prayer, or even liking a socials post, means these people aren't forgotten; as little as £4 can buy food for someone's child; an hour or two a week volunteering means more work gets done to help others. 💖 We can all do something to show we care. UNICEF, short for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, is an organization that was created in 1946. The main purpose of the organization is to provide humanitarian aid to children around the world. It was originally intended as a relief fund to help children after World War II. In 1953, UNICEF adopted the mandate to help vulnerable children all over the world, regardless of the cause. 2.4 MILLION PEOPLE UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency has estimated that a staggering 2.4 million people will be forcibly displaced in 2024. This is a 20% increase since last year, meaning that the refugee crisis is accelerating, and so must our efforts to combat it. That's: 2.4 million people in need of shelter. 2.4 million people in need of food. 2.4 million people in need of medical and social support. 2.4 million people in need of humanity. This problem is by no means an easy fix, but at Indigo we believe that small actions create a big impact.
