The (somewhat) surprise news that Washington (my alma mater) is leaving the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten (along with Oregon, UCLA, and USC) totally changes the geography and makeup of both conferences.
In fact, it's hard to describe how vast the distance is between the current teams and the new teams without using a map like this (courtesy of Field Yates). The shortest distance from the University of Washington to any current Big Ten school is the University of Nebraska, which is 1,600 miles away.
It also strikes me how much the landscape of college sports has changed even over the last few years. Between endorsement deals for college athletes and the expectation that every game will be on national television, there's a lot at stake for both the schools and the athletes. The Pac-12 was originally formed as the Pacific Coast Conference over 100 years ago in 1915. It eventually became the Pac-10 in 1978 and the Pac-12 in 2011. #Maps #CollegeSports #BigTen
