Lights, Camera, AI. There’s a new musician around the corner and it’s not ‘who' you think it is. Recently Dr Charles Martin from the ANU School of Computing, joined by two of his students and Dr Alexander Hunter from the ANU School Of Music had the most epic concert ever. With AI and augmented reality embedded in their instruments, it was not just a sight for sore eyes but music for the soul. Researchers at ANU have introduced AI to help diagnose diseases, figure out the origins of the Universe, solve complex computational problems, and co-pilot helicopters. However, generative AI has yet to be used this way. So, what’s that sound you ask? Just a duet of humans and AI in concert. Where does studying Engineering at ANU take you? How about Singapore? Meet Borui - a recent alumni from the ANU Bachelor of Engineering (Honours). He now works for Bombardier, an aerospace company in Singapore. During his studies, Bouri got to enjoy some fun Capstone projects including helping design a new steering wheel for the ANU Solar Racing team and transforming an old Ford Focus car into an autonomous vehicle. Applications for studying Master of Applied Cybernetics in 2025 close on the 23rd August! Meet Izak from our 2024 cohort. "I've gone from a room with a lecturer and equations where everything has one clear truth and answer, to Cybernetics which is about the art of the truth. Using Cybernetics, you still use fact and logic to navigate the system, how it works and functions, but you consider everything moving together rather than in isolation." Izak recently graduated from a Bachelor of Actuary and Mathematical studies at ANU before undertaking the Cybernetics Masters. Intrigued? Come to our online information session on the 6th of August. Learn more about how to apply for our Masters of Applied Cybernetics, applications closing soon! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g7yqc5UX ANU School of Cybernetics

Ready? Get, set and thesis! 3 minutes, 1 slide, a room full of people. That's the Three Minute Competition (3MT) for you. An idea that started during a drought is now a hallmark event across university calendars. Our PhD students faced the impossible task of summarising their thesis in just 3 minutes for a non-specialist audience. If that wasn't hard enough, they only had 1 slide to help them. The CECC Finals were nerve-wracking, with Richard Zhang emerging victorious for his idea, ‘The Carbon Knight’, an innovative tech that uses super scalable capsules with breathable membranes to convert CO2 into a solid, safe substance. Richard will now go on to represent CECC at the ANU 3MT finals happening on July 25! CECC students to represent South Pacific in ICPC World Championship! The team, comprising of Hadyn Tang, Andrew Kerr, and Cormac Kikkert, coached by Ahad N. Zehmakan, has earned one of only two spots from the South Pacific region to compete in The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals. They dominated the regional round in Sydney after qualifying in the preliminary round by finishing second out of 134 teams. The ICPC - International Collegiate Programming Contest, the world's oldest and most prestigious programming competition, challenges teams to design and implement complex algorithms within a five-hour timeframe. This achievement underscores the exceptional computing programs offered at ANU and its ability to nurture top-tier talent in Computer Science. Congratulations to our team for their outstanding performance! Wishing them the best of luck in the ICPC World Championship in September 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan! 👏 #OurANU #Programming #Computing #ICPC #StudentWins ANU School of Computing

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (23 June), the School of Engineering Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity working group hosted a panel discussion. We heard from four exceptional women – Professor Valeska Ting, Associate Professor Prasanga Samarasinghe, Dr Heping Shen and Dr Dr Kiara Bruggeman. The panellists shared their invaluable insights and personal experiences, touching on the challenges they’ve overcome in their careers, offering advice for young women aspiring to leadership roles, and discussing the art of balancing work and life. Thank you to our panellists and everyone who attended. Special thanks to our moderator, Dr Julie Tournet. #WomenInEngineering #INWED2024 #Inspiration #Leadership #Engineering #OurANU
