Folks, do you know where the largest city in Europe is?
Its here in Russia. Have you ever heard of Moscow? More then 10 million people live in Russias capital!
Moscow wasnt built in a day and right now Moscows growing high and wide at a fantastic speed! In Moscow theres politics, finance, science, sport, theater, museums, television Whew! How can you get everywhere on time? Only underground, in the metro. By the way, its the most beautiful in the world!
But there are places in Moscow where people only walk, like on the famous Arbat Street. Although the first places that the citys guests visit are the Kremlin and Red Square, because that's where Russias true heart is!
There you go! The country has many faces but theres only one Moscow!

Folks, do you know where people run a marathon when it is 40 degrees below zero? Here, in Siberia, in the city of Omsk. Every year at Christmas time athletes from different countries come here.
During the Civil War Admiral Kolchak declared Omsk the capital of Russia and kept all the golden treasures of tsarist Russia here. Today, it is still a mystery where these treasures have gone to!
But the real treasure of Omsk is its people. An inhabitant of Omsk is able to cope with everything: to make petrol from oil, to make car tyres. And they build so many houses and magnificent temples!
The famous painter Michael Vrubel was born in Omsk. And it is Omsk where ingenious writing talent of Fyodor Dostoevsky was developed.

Folks, do you know where the deepest borehole was drilled? Its here, in Russia, at the Kola Peninsula. It goes 12 kilometers deep into the Earth's interior.
The Khibiny Mountains hold great treasures inside - nickel, chrome, copper seven hundred different kinds of minerals! And the sky glows with the northern lights because Murman, as people have called it for ages, lies above the polar circle.
Murmansk is the northernmost non-freezing port city in Russia. Here is the worlds only nuclear-powered fleet of icebreakers. Strategic submarines are also not far from here.
Murmansk is surrounded by mossy tundra where trees grow out along the ground and mushrooms can grow larger than trees.
There you go! Different nature, but one country!

Folks, do you know where Yuri Gagarins spaceship was built? In Samara, thats where. Here on the bank of the Volga, they build cars, planes and spaceships.
Since ancient times merchant boats, barge haulers and steamboats floated on the great river. It was here, near Samara, that the first railway connecting the east and west of Russia crossed the Volga.
Oh, how much Samara has grown since then. In the times of war when the government moved to this city it became a spare capital.
Hundreds of thousands of people come together in the vicinity of Samara every summer for Grushinka, the worlds largest festival of guitar songs.

Folks, do you know where you can read a newspaper while lying down on the surface of a lake? Its in Russia, in Khakassia, on Lake Tus, which is renowned for its healing qualities. Because of its hypersalination it's impossible not to float.
Khakassia minerals are good for peoples health and good for the economy. The region provides Russia with molybdenum and copper, and aluminium is also produced here. The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric station on the Yenisei river is the largest power plant in Russia. Believe it or not, but its dam is 245 metres high.
In Khakassia you can discover messages from ancient times at every turn: there are more than 30,000 rock paintings, burial mounds and sculptures here. People still visit Khurtuyakh Tas, the stone woman, the ancient statue which is thought to protect fertility.

Do you know where you can see a real mammoth inside an ice block? Its here, in Russia, on the Taimyr Peninsula, in the very north of the Krasnoyarsk Krai.
Here on the Putorana Plateau there are huge canyons, hundreds of waterfalls and even 25,000 lakes!
The worlds largest reindeer herds are also here. But it is not only reindeer breeders who live in this part of the world. Above the polar circle where night lasts for half a year and the winter is eight months long, the big modern city of Norilsk is located. Its mines and factories produce nickel, copper and gold.
In the far north you cannot find anything like this. Local people are the most frost-proof in the world!

Folks,do you know where the man who invented the lightbulb was born? In Russia, not far from Tambov. The Russian engineer, Alexander Lodygin, got a patent for the incandescent light bulb four years before Edison did.

Folks, do you know where towns spring up like mushrooms? It is here in Russia, in Western Siberia: Yugorsk, Nizhnevartovsk, Nefteyugansk - dozens of towns and settlements have appeared in Yugra in just a few years.
Yugra is the land of the Khanty and Mansi tribes. It used to be completely covered with taiga, and fish and furs were the only things produced here.
But then, half a century ago, all of a sudden, oil was found here. What things began to appear here! Oil derricks, railways, pipelines. Nowadays Yugra produces more than half of Russias oil!
Not far from the regions major city Khanty-Mansiysk the full-flowing Irtysh falls into the river Ob, which is the largest river in Russia. Its more than 5,000 kilometres long!

Folks, do you know where parallel straight lines cross? Its here, in Russia, in Tatarstan! This clever geometry was invented at Kazan University by mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky!
Two mighty rivers, the Volga and Kama, meet near Kazan, a city with a millennial history. For centuries, two world religions have been neighbors in Tatarstan Islam and Christianity.
Tatarstan is famous for its oil as well as airplanes and helicopters. And trucks from Naberezhnye Chelny have even won the Sahara Race!
Theres so much fun at the Tartar festival of Sabantuy! Here youll be treated to honey chak-chak. And everybody demonstrates their daring. The grand prize, a ram, is given to the strongest Batyr at Sabantuy!

Do you folks know where crayfish spend their winter? Its in our country, in Russia, in Tver Oblast. There used to be so many crayfish, that one of them even climbed onto city emblem of Vesyegorsk.
This land is the cradle of the Volga, the Dnieper and the Western Dvina rivers, which flow into three different seas. In order to connect the Baltic and the Caspian seas tsar Peter the Great built the first in Russia system of channels.
Even Pushkin praised the Pozharsky cutlets from Torzhok. And today the regions calling card is firefighting machinery, railway carriages and powerful excavators!
The pride of Tver is the merchant Afanasy Nikitin. Back in the 15th century he travelled all the way to India from here and wrote a book about it.

Folks, do you know where meat dumplings came from and later became popular all over Russia? Of course, they are from Udmurtia! The Russian word pelmen originates from two Udmurtians words: Pel which means ear and Nyan which is bread. So pelmen means a bread ear.
Udmurtia is the territory of clear springsthere are thousands of them welling up from the earth!
The capital of the republic is the city Izhevsk. It has been called the smithy of Russian arms since the war with Napoleon. And more than a half a century ago Mikhail Kalashnikov designed his famous AK-47 assault rifle, which has became the symbol of Russian arms throughout the world.
One more world-famous celebrity is connected with these lands. The great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who wrote the score to the Swan Lake ballet, was born in Votkinsk.
