Lithuania plans permanent fortifications on Russia, Belarus borders – minister

BNS 2024.05.22 17:35

Lithuania plans to install permanent fortifications on its borders with Russia and Belarus to stop the possible movement of hostile forces, Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas has said.

“The installation [of fortifications] is planned in some specific places, which I would not like to name today, by the end of the summer or early fall,” the minister told reporters on Wednesday.

Lithuania also plans to have a dozen so-called counter-mobility parks filled by the end of the summer to be used for the installation of more fortifications, if necessary.

Kasčiūnas vows to present a “counter-mobility plan” by the end of June. It will contain more information on counter-mobility parks, counter-mobility measures, and permanent fortifications, he said.

Speaking about the Baltic Defence Line, a network of fortifications along the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus, Kasčiūnas stressed that the neighbouring countries were “moving forward with this idea”, despite having different mechanisms in place.

Metal Czech hedgehogs, reinforced concrete blocks and tetrahedrons, concertina, and other defensive equipment will be used to build fortifications.
