This 90-minute session will introduce the Library of Congress’s BibFrame project, the “bibliographic framework” that is intended to replace MARC format as a way to encode cataloging information. It will introduce the concept, characteristics, and features of BibFrame, explain its relationship to current standards and practices, and discuss the possible timeline and process for implementation by bibliographic utilities, Integrated Library Systems, and libraries.
At the end of this session, participants will:
Understand the characteristics and features of the Library of Congress’s BibFrame project
Be able to explain its relationship to MARC and other cataloging tools and standards
Be aware of the possible timetable and process for implementation as they are currently envisioned
Know what practitioners can do to learn more and be ready for implementation

Mary K Bolin, PhD, teaches cataloging and metadata in the School of Information at San José State University, as well as teaching cataloging classes for the American Library Association. She has been a librarian since 1981 and is a catalog and metadata librarian in the University Libraries at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.
