IIIF (iiif.io) doesn’t just stand for a technical framework, it represents a global community of people working together towards advancing access to educational resources as well as engagement with these resources. Museum collections hold great value when it comes to the study of humanities. Using IIIF, digital collections around the world can be used for teaching, storytelling, and research across institutions.
In this session we’ll look at a variety of cultural organizations and their IIIF implementations. The case studies range from using IIIF to enable beautiful zooms on object webpages, to presenting digital tools in public galleries to explore ‘untouchable’ sketchbooks. We’ll see examples of IIIF used in teaching and to enhance storytelling with digital collections.

Instructor: Tina Shah
For over 20 years, Tina Shah has worked as an artist, teacher, designer, programmer and an overall collaborator in numerous digital projects ranging from web applications to virtual reality. With a B.A. in Interactive Multimedia from Columbia College Chicago and a M.F.A. in Electronic Visualization from University of Illinois at Chicago, Tina has taught college-level classes on digital photography, video production, websites and database design. The last 10+ years she has had the opportunity to develop online, mobile, and in-gallery experiences at a variety of museums including The Getty (Los Angeles), Field Museum (Chicago), Frank Lloyd Wright Trust (Chicago), and is now a Senior Developer at the Art Institute of Chicago. Tina is also one of the co-chairs of the IIIF Museums Community group.
