In 2021, the University of Virginia received a LYRASIS Catalyst Fund for experiments with LIDAR and wayfinding. With the help of the local University College and Health System community, as well as a national network of developers, UVA was able to:
Contribute hundreds of miles of manually mapped sidewalks to an open repository
Map 2 million square feet of interior hospital floorplans to support indoor wayfinding
Collaborate on federal grants with accessibility experts
Support leading edge LIDAR & haptic feedback development orchestrated by low-vision community members
Join us for a panel discussion with talented experts, featuring a conversation about this project and the larger wayfinding ecosystem. We will also be participating in a hands-on exercise with related tools.

By the end of this class, students will be able to:
Demonstrate awareness of best practices and state-of-the-art with consumer LIDAR technology with regards to accessibility assessment and broadcasting in the mobility challenged and blind/low-vision areas
Utilize mapping tools for wayfinding in the accessibility community
Describe how to use sidewalk mapping with OpenStreetMap and interior mapping with MazeMap
