Fedora 6.0, the next major version of the software, is quickly approaching a production release. Fedora 6.0 includes robust migration tooling and a documented path to get from all previous versions of the software to the latest 6.0 release. This workshop will provide an overview of the Fedora 3.x to 6.0 migration path, including a detailed walkthrough of the migration-utils and fcrepo-migration-validator. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on exercises using these tools to migrate and validate sample Fedora 3.x data to the new Fedora 6.0 and OCFL-compliant format. They will also be able to explore this migrated data in a new Fedora 6.0 instance.
This is a technical workshop pitched at an intermediate level. Prior experience with Fedora is preferred, and participants should be comfortable using a Command Line Interface and Docker.
This workshop has been developed as part of the Fedora Migration Paths and Tools project, which has been generously funded by the IMLS (LG-246264-OLS-20).
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
- Have familiarity with the Fedora 3.x to 6.0 migration process
- Be comfortable with the migration utility and migration validation tool
- Gain hands-on experience with migrating content into Fedora 6.0
Instructor: David Wilcox
David Wilcox is the Program Leader for Fedora at LYRASIS. He has more than ten years experience managing open source projects, teams, and communities. Working with hundreds of organizations across the Fedora, Islandora, and Samvera communities provides David insight into the use cases and opportunities for open source software within libraries, archives, and museums. As Program Leader David is responsible for setting the vision for Fedora and serving as strategic liaison to the governance groups, members, and other stakeholders. David works together with the Fedora Technical Lead to oversee key project processes and undertakes international engagement through public speaking, developing and delivering workshops, facilitating user group meetings, and pursuing partnerships and grant funding for Fedora-related projects. David graduated from St. Thomas University (BA) and the Dalhousie School of Information Management (MLIS). Prior to joining LYRASIS he was the Program Manager at discoverygarden inc and the Islandora Training and Support Coordinator at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Danny Bernstein has served as the Fedora Tech Lead since 2017. A software engineer by trade, he has led collaborative design and development efforts on open-source and open-content projects in the digital scholarly ecosystem since 2005, including Archive-It, DuraCloud, and Fedora. He lives in Occidental, CA with his family and enjoys making music with friends.
