Bringing The Hate Race to the stage

Every production has a life before it reaches the stage. Sometimes it takes years for an artistic idea to come to fruition, but thanks to our supporters, we are there, from the start, encouraging and supporting our artists to proceed down the road less travelled. 

This year, Malthouse supporters helped us bring the five-star production The Hate Race from script to stage. A work seven years in the making, The Hate Race was an adaptation of acclaimed writer and poet Maxine Beneba Clarke's award-winning memoir of the same name about growing up the child of Black migrants in Sydney’s western suburbs.

It’s a story that challenged and changed Australia’s understanding of itself. And we knew our audiences needed to hear it.   

Through the generosity of donors, we not only adapted The Hate Race to extraordinary acclaim but launched the massively successful related community program, ‘Labrish’, a celebration of storytelling and connection designed for people who identify as African diasporic, First Peoples, people of colour and underrepresented creatives.
