Variations in Oil Occurrence State and Properties during High-Speed Stirring Treatment of Oily Sludge

Oily sludge (OS) has long been regarded as a hazardous waste, and improper disposal may lead to serious environmental concerns and human health risks. Despite various methods having been proposed and applied to the treatment of OS, the oil occurrence states and properties in sludge are rarely characterized, which may directly link to the selection and effectiveness of treatment methods. Here, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), gas chromatography (GC), and four components (SARA) analysis were utilized to characterize the changes in the oil occurrence states and compositions in OS samples before and after high-speed stirring (HSS) treatment. Our results show a substantial reduction in the oil concentration of OS after HSS treatment (from 32.98% to 1.65%), while SARA analysis reveals a similar oil composition before and after treatment, suggesting the broad applicability of HSS in removing oil and its insignificant selectivity towards various hydrocarbon components. This is further supported by the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis results, which show that the separated oil phase has a hydrocarbon composition similar to that of the original OS sample. The CLSM and fluorescence analysis suggest a homogeneous distribution of oil in the sludge, with relatively light components more concentrated in the pore systems between coarse mineral particles, whereas relatively heavy components tend to coexist with clay minerals. After HSS cleaning, both light and heavy components are removed to varying degrees, but light components are preferentially removed while heavy components tend to be retained in the sludge due to adsorption by clay minerals. This is consistent with TPH analysis, where a significant decrease in n-alkanes with lower carbon numbers (n-C14 to n-C20) was observed in the residual sample. Our findings demonstrate the dynamic response of oil occurrence states and compositions to the OS treatment process and highlight the importance of characterizing these fundamental properties prior to the selection of OS treatment methods. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty after a Previous Glaucoma Treatment

Background/Objectives: Recent prospective studies have shown that selective laser tra-beculoplasty (SLT) is a safe and cost-effective alternative to pressure-reducing eye drop therapy as a first-line treatment for ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. In addition to its comparable efficacy to eye drop therapy, SLT has been particularly effective in delaying the time until a surgical intervention is needed. The aim of our evaluation is to analyze patients who have received SLT following a pressure-reducing procedure. The primary endpoint is the duration until a subsequent interventional or surgical procedure is required. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 98 patients who underwent selective laser trabeculoplasty following a previous pressure-reducing procedure between 2017 and 2023. The statistical analyses included Cox regression and Kaplan–Meier survival estimations. Results: In total, 122 eyes of 98 patients received selective laser trabeculoplasty following a previous pressure-reducing procedure at the Department of Ophthalmology in Freiburg. The median follow-up period was 381.5 days (range 43.25–862.75 days). Approximately 68% of the eyes did not require another pressure-reducing procedure 365 days after the intervention, while about 58% of the eyes remained without another procedure after 730 days, according to Kaplan–Meier analysis. No significant difference was found between the different types of glaucoma regarding the duration until a subsequent pressure-reducing procedure was needed. The study indicated a tendency for patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma to undergo a secondary intervention earlier compared to those with primary open-angle glaucoma (p = 0.16). The intraocular pressure before SLT had a significant impact on the duration until the subsequent operation (p = 0.005). Conclusions: SLT is an effective method even after a previous pressure-reducing procedure for patients in whom further pressure-reducing interventions need to be delayed. Full article

Photobiomodulation as Medicine: Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for Acute Tissue Injury or Sport Performance Recovery

Background/Objectives: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has gained traction in sports and exercise medicine as a non-invasive therapeutic for preconditioning the body, exertion recovery, repair and injury rehabilitation. LLLT is hypothesized to modulate cellular metabolism, tissue microenvironment(s) and to decrease inflammation while posing few adverse risks. This review critically examines the evidence-base for LLLT effectiveness focusing on immediate care settings and acute/subacute applications (<6 months post-injury). Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted, prioritizing systematic reviews, meta-analyses and their primary research papers. Results: Findings are relevant to trainers and athletes as they manage a wide range of issues from superficial abrasions to deeper tissue concerns. LLLT parameters in the research literature include wide ranges. For body surface structures, studies show that LLLT holds promise in accelerating wound healing. In sport performance studies, LLLT is typically delivered pre-exercise and reveals beneficial effects on exertion recovery, improvements in muscle strength, endurance and reduced fatigue. Evidence is less convincing for acute, deep tissue injury models, where most studies do not report significant benefits for functional outcomes over conventional therapeutic modalities. Conclusions: Variability in LLLT delivery parameters and findings across studies underscores a need for clear treatment guidelines for the profession. Technical properties of laser light delivery to the body also differ materially from LED devices. Sport physiotherapists, team physicians, trainers and athletes should understand limitations in the current evidence-base informing photobiomodulation use in high-performance sport settings and weigh potential benefits versus shortcomings of LLLT use in the mentioned therapeutic contexts. Vulvovaginal atrophy, characterized by the thinning of vaginal mucosa typically resulting from reduced estrogen levels, is frequently exacerbated by oncogynecologic treatments such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, radiotherapy, or surgery. This condition significantly impacts the quality of life for cancer survivors, leading to persistent discomfort, heightened infection risk, and negative effects on sexual function and self-esteem. Despite being a relatively common complication, vulvovaginal atrophy is not always discussed before the start of treatment. Treatments typically mirror those used for natural menopause; however, efficacy and safety data specific to this population are limited due to the exclusion of these patients from clinical trials. A major safety concern is the risk of hormone-sensitive cancer recurrence associated with estrogen therapy, which drives a preference for non-hormonal alternatives. Newer treatments, such as laser therapy, radiofrequency, and vaginal injections, show promise with minimal side effects and hormone-independent mechanisms, though efficacy data varies, highlighting the need for further research. This narrative review explores the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and management of vulvovaginal atrophy after the treatment for oncogynecologic disorders. Full article

Comparison of Efficacy of Micropulse Laser Settings for Glaucoma Management

Objectives: This study aims to compare micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) laser parameters and determine the optimal laser setting. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 351 eyes from patients who underwent MP-TSCPC at four power settings (1500 mW, 2000 mW, 2250 mW, and 2500 mW) from June 2018 to December 2021. The primary measurements of the efficacy of MP-TSCPC were the degree of intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction and the number of glaucoma medication reductions. The rate of hypotony was obtained to assess the safety of MP-TSCPC. Results: At 1500, 2000, and 2500 mW, the mean IOP reduction at each visit was statistically significant compared to the baseline, and at 2250 mW, the mean IOP was only significantly different at 18 months (p < 0.05). The change in the number of medications with 2000 mW has shown significance at 1 and 3 months from the baseline; with 2500 mW, statistical significance was shown at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months (p < 0.05) compared to the baseline. Mean IOP reductions (%) were greater in 2000 mW than in 1500 mW at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months and were greater in 2500 than in 1500 mW at 1 week (p < 0.05). There was no significance for mean IOP reductions at 6, 12, and 18 months across all powers. Only two occurrences of hypotony were reported. Conclusions: MP-TSCPC at 1500 mW, 2000 mW, and 2500 mW is a safe and effective treatment for IOP reduction. MP-TSCPC at 2250 mW is safe but may show delayed effectiveness in IOP reduction. In the long term, no one specific power setting was found to be superior for IOP reduction. Full article

(1) Background: The demand for body-contouring procedures has surged, with lipolysis emerging as a common technique for excess fat removal. Laser-assisted lipolysis (LAL) has gained attention as a potential alternative to surgical fat removal (SFR), offering perceived advantages in safety and efficacy. However, the comparative benefits of LAL and SFR remain uncertain. (2) Objective: To conduct a review of the existing literature comparing the efficacy, safety, and patient satisfaction of LAL and SFR. (3) Methods: A comprehensive search of major electronic databases was conducted to identify studies comparing LAL and SFR for body-contouring procedures. Studies were included if they were published in English, involved human subjects, and reported outcomes for LAL and SFR. All studies were classified according to the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine evidence hierarchy (4) Results: LAL may not be a safer and more effective option than SFR. However, the evidence for these differences was limited by the quality of the studies and the heterogeneity of the results. (5) Conclusions: This review suggests that LAL may not be a safer and more effective option than SFR for body-contouring procedures because LAL is associated with higher risks of complications such as burns and scarring, whereas SFR offers a more established safety profile and consistent efficacy. Objectives: To report the outcomes of novel modified transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in treating band keratopathy (BK). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients who underwent PTK for BK at the Sussex Eye Laser Clinic, Nuffield Health, Brighton. Patients with BK obscuring the visual axis, affecting visual acuity, or causing discomfort were considered for PTK. All the patients underwent preoperative evaluation, including preoperative corneal topography and optical coherence tomography. Modified transepithelial PTK was performed without using EDTA for chelation or alcohol for epithelium debridement. Patients were followed up for one week and then every two weeks after that until two months. Preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuities (BCVA) were compared using a paired t-test. Results: We studied 15 eyes of nine patients undergoing novel PTK for BK. The mean age was 80 ± 5.73 years. The mean pre-treatment visual acuity was 0.68 ± 0.17 logMAR (range: 0.6 logMAR to 1 logMAR) and improved to 0.22 ± 0.09 logMAR (p < 0.05), ranging from 0.18 to 0.48 logMAR at two months following PTK. None of the patients complained of ocular discomfort following the procedure. A repeat procedure was not required for any of these patients. Conclusions: Modified transepithelial PTK is an effective procedure for improving visual outcomes in patients with band keratopathy and should be considered for the treatment of band keratopathy. Background: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive procedure used to manage pain and inflammation. The aim of this study is to quantitatively measure pain and inflammation and to compare the proposed PBM treatment with a simulated treatment (PBM-SHAM) in patients with dental implants. Materials and Methods: A total of 62 patients were included and randomized into two groups. Group 1 (PBM) consisted of 31 patients subjected to the insertion of dental implants and a single intraoral PBM session with an EPIC X Biolase (0.5 W and 15 J/cm²) diode laser. Group II (PBM-SHAM) included 31 patients subjected to dental implants and a simulated PBM. Each patient was given a document with visual analog scales (VASs) to record pain and inflammation during the 7 days post-surgery. The patients were assessed at the end of the week to remove the sutures, to collect the VASs, and to re-evaluate the surveys. Results: Through the use of mixed effects models, it was found that the length of time after the surgery and the number of implants placed during the intervention were important variables that had an influence on pain and inflammation. Conclusions: PBM is a non-invasive and safe treatment. Postoperative pain and inflammation associated with implant surgery decreased in a similar manner over time, independently of the application of PBM. Therefore, more randomized studies are needed with a standardized methodology to adequately assess the efficacy of this therapy. Full article

Bim Expression Influences Choroidal Endothelial Cell Characteristics and Their Response to Therapeutic Intervention

In the aging population, choroidal vessels grow through the Bruch’s membrane, resulting in a loss of central vision due to choroidal neovascularization (CNV). During active neovascularization, CNV is associated with inappropriate levels of apoptosis in multiple cell types, including choroidal endothelial cells (ChECs). Bim is a pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family. It is essential for cell apoptosis due to exposure to drugs such as dexamethasone or decreased pro-survival factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). To better elucidate the cell autonomous contribution of Bim expression in the integrity and neovascularization of the choroidal vasculature, we isolated ChECs from wild-type and Bim-deficient (Bim−/−) mice. ChECs lacking Bim expression demonstrated increased expression of VEGF, osteopontin, and the inflammatory cytokines Rantes/Ccl5 and IL6. Bim−/− ChECs were more proliferative and demonstrated an increased capacity to undergo capillary morphogenesis. Anti-VEGF had a diminished capacity to disrupt capillary morphogenesis in Bim−/− ChECs. In vivo, utilizing the mouse laser photocoagulation model, anti-VEGF treatment mitigated CNV in wild-type but not Bim−/− mice. We also tested other modalities that are thought to not require the intrinsic death pathway for their function and showed that propranolol, anti-CTGF, and the TSP1-mimetic peptide ABT898 mitigated CNV in mice lacking Bim expression to varying degrees. Thus, in ChECs, Bim expression could impact the effectiveness of treatment modalities that require the intrinsic death pathway to mitigate CNV. Full article

Within the scope of these investigations, the feasibility of a material bond between Ti-6Al-4V and the magnesium alloy AZ91 is analyzed. Ti-6Al-4V is frequently used for implants due to its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and specific strength. However, depending on the surface quality, the attachment behavior of the bone to the implant varies. Magnesium implants promote the regeneration of bone tissue and biodegrade as the bone tissue heals. Combining the properties of both materials in one implant enables a reduced implant volume and increased stability. For this reason, this study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a material bond between the materials Ti-6Al-4V and AZ91. For this purpose, Ti-6Al-4V truncated cones and AZ91 sleeves were produced using the additive manufacturing process of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). The as-built sleeves were then pressed onto machined truncated cones. Since zinc serves as a lubricant and has good diffusion properties with the materials used as a result of heat treatment, a comparison was made between zinc-coated and the as-built Ti-6Al-4V samples. This showed that a bond was created after hot isostatic pressing and that the push-out force could be increased by more than 4.5 times. Thyroid nodules are a common, benign condition with a higher prevalence in women, individuals with iodine deficiency, and radiation exposure. Treatment options for benign thyroid nodules include pharmaceutical therapy, thyroidectomy, and thermal ablation (TA). TA, including laser ablation (LA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and microwave ablation (MWA), is a procedure that uses heat to cause tissue necrosis. It is commonly used for large, firm, benign, non-functioning thyroid nodules that cause severe symptoms or pain when surgery is not recommended or desired. When thyroid nodules do not respond to TA, they undergo surgery to resolve the symptoms and clarify the diagnosis. This study aims to analyze the histological alterations found in surgically excised TA-treated thyroid nodules and to evaluate the morphological criteria of differential diagnosis between benign and malignant nodules, establishing whether the alterations observed on the histological sample are a consequence of TA or indicative of neoplastic disease. For this purpose, the adoption of ancillary methods, such as immunohistochemistry, is fundamental to distinguish the artifacts induced by TA from the typical morphological characteristics of malignant neoplasms. This study investigates the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of high-nickel shipbuilding steel during thermal processing using high-temperature confocal laser-scanning microscopy (HTCLSM). An in situ observation of the heating and holding processes reveals critical insights into phase transformations, grain-growth behavior, and the formation of precipitates. The experimental results demonstrate that austenitization begins at approximately 700 °C, with significant grain-boundary nucleation. At 900 °C, the formation of black precipitates was observed, and their persistence up to temperatures exceeding 1000 °C was confirmed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses identified these precipitates as chromium carbides (Cr7C3), which significantly contribute to the material’s strength. A comprehensive analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the presence and distribution of Cr7C3 within the grains and along grain boundaries. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the microstructural dynamics in high-nickel steels, guiding the optimization of heat-treatment processes to enhance mechanical properties for maritime applications. Permanent Makeup Removal Severe Complication—Case Report and Proposal of the Protocol for Its Management

Background: The purpose of this paper is to report the case of a patient who developed a local allergic reaction to the pigment used for permanent eyebrow makeup. In addition, the authors’ protocol for the treatment of such a complication is proposed. Methods: A patient visited the clinic to remove permanent eyebrow makeup. In the patient’s opinion, the eyebrows were too dark and incorrectly shaped. Upon physical examination of the brows, they were found to be over-pigmented and drawn outside the area of hair growth of the natural brow. Results: The patient underwent 24 treatment procedures to remove the pigmentation including four sessions of laser therapy and subsequent treatments using a chemical substance (remover). No adverse effects occurred during the initial phase of makeup removal (black pigment removal), but an allergic reaction appeared with the removal of the red-orange colored pigment (after the fourth laser therapy session). The following symptoms appeared: redness, swelling, and the appearance of papules filled with both serous fluid and pigment used for the permanent makeup. After each remover treatment, the allergic reaction decreased, and local symptoms gradually subsided. Additionally, topical corticosteroid treatment was implemented peri-procedurally. The patient’s case suggests a secondary allergic reaction to the red-orange pigment used for permanent makeup. Conclusions: The literature on this topic is scarce; therefore, we present a regimen for the management of such complications. In addition, we draw attention to the fact that allergic reactions to pigment may not always occur immediately following skin pigmentation but may become apparent long after the procedure, such as when the allergen is “exposed” during an attempt to remove or correct the makeup. Real-Time Fluorescence Monitoring System for Optimal Light Dosage in Cancer Photoimmunotherapy

Background/Objectives: Near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT) was recently approved for the treatment of unresectable locally advanced or recurrent head and neck cancers in Japan; however, only one clinical dose has been validated in clinical trials, potentially resulting in excessive or insufficient dosing. Moreover, IRDye700X (IR700) fluorescence intensity plateaus during treatment, indicating a particular threshold for the antitumor effects. Therefore, we investigated the NIR laser dose across varying tumor sizes and irradiation methods until the antitumor effects of the fluorescence decay rate plateaued. Methods: Mice were subcutaneously transplanted with A431 xenografts and categorized into control, clinical dose (cylindrical irradiation at 100 J/cm², frontal irradiation at 50 J/cm²), and evaluation groups. The rate of tumor IR700 fluorescence intensity decay to reach predefined rates (−0.05%/s or −0.2%/s) until the cessation of light irradiation was calculated using a real-time fluorescence imaging system. Results: The evaluation group exhibited antitumor effects comparable to those of the clinical dose group at a low irradiation dose. Similar results were observed across tumor sizes and irradiation methods. Conclusions: In conclusion, the optimal antitumor effect of NIR-PIT is achieved when the fluorescence decay rate reaches a plateau, indicating the potential to determine the appropriate dose for PIT using a real-time fluorescence monitoring system. Effects of Tempering on Microstructure and Properties of Additive Manufacturing Cu-Bearing AISI 431 Steel

AISI 431 martensitic stainless steels (MSS) with 2.5 wt% Cu were fabricated via laser-directed energy deposition additive manufacturing followed by single-step tempering treatment. The influences of different tempering times at 600 °C on microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-deposited 431-2.5Cu MSS have been explored and analyzed. The as-deposited MSS specimen primarily consisted of lath martensite, austenite and M23C6 carbide. After the single-step tempering treatment at 600 °C, Cu-enriched (ԑ-Cu) nano-precipitates and reverse austenite can be formed and promoted by extending the tempering treatment. The microhardness, strength and elongation can be improved with increasing the tempering time up to 1.0 h, and subsequently reduced with the tempering time prolonging to 2.0 h. Compared to 431 MSS that requires a multiple-step heat treatment for excellent performance, the 431-2.5Cu MSS specimen presented superior tensile properties after single-step tempering at 600 °C for 1.0 h in the present work. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation (EL) of one-hour tempered MSS were 1611 MPa, 1334 MPa and 16.3%, respectively. This study provides a quantitative theoretical reference and experimental basis for realizing short-process fabrication of the Cu-bearing MSS with high strength and ductility. Full article
