Working with us

Photo: Working with us

We’re here to transform the futures of as many deaf children and young people as possible, in the UK and around the world. And our people are key to helping to make this happen.

Whether it’s giving expert advice and information on childhood deafness, campaigning for deaf children’s rights or making the world deaf aware, our people are at the heart of all our work. We value everyone who works on our behalf to give deaf children the very best start in life.

That’s why we’ve created tailored benefits and rewards that support all our people through their journey with us. We’ve based our offer on what our staff told us is important to them, and we’ve pushed hard to make sure our rewards and benefits are fully accessible for everyone.

Your work life balance

Leave

We offer 25 days holiday (pro rata) each year, plus Bank holidays. We give an extra day’s holiday on the anniversary of you joining (up to a maximum of five days) and an additional three days’ holiday over the Christmas period. Bank holidays don’t have to be taken when they fall; you can choose when to take them, giving you more flexibility.

In addition to our generous annual leave, we also provide compassionate leave, carer’s leave, family leave and fertility leave, as well as the opportunity to take a career break.

Flexible working hours

We actively encourage everyone to achieve the right balance between work and home. We offer flexibility around location and working hours (around our core hours of 10am to 2.30pm).

We’re also happy to consider alternative working patterns such as condensed hours. Most roles are home-based, with hybrid working available for some of our roles.

We also offer the opportunity to work overseas for an agreed amount of time to fit in with holidays.

Your health and wellbeing

We’ve partnered with Westfield Health, a leading not-for-profit supplier of health and wellbeing products and services. Westfield provide money back on everyday healthcare bills, like optical, dental, therapy sessions, prescription charges and vaccinations.

We also offer cancer support and support with fertility through the IVF Network.

Our Employee Assistance Programme is there to support you with day-to-day challenges. The 24/7 service is free, confidential to use and offers counselling, advice and information on various subjects, whether it’s work related or personal.

How we reward you

Pay

Our pay is competitive within the charity sector, and we give additional discretionary performance-related salary increases in June each year.

Pension scheme and death in service

Making sure we are secure for our future is something we all need to consider. That’s why we provide a generous Personal Pension Plan with Aegon.

We pay 5.5% of your salary into the scheme, and you contribute 1.5%. We also pay a death in service benefit of three times your annual salary.

Recognition and rewards

You’ll get a range of fantastic benefits when you join us, including high street discounts, offers on gym memberships and health clubs, online classes and family experience days.

We’ve also teamed up with partners to provide discounts on things like car rental and free impartial mortgage advice. Our recruitment referral bonus means that if you refer someone to work for us and they’re hired, we’ll give you a bonus to say thank you.

Learning and development

We support all our people to learn and develop. We offer a range of in-house and external training programmes, including Deaf Awareness and British Sign Language, and our e-learning platform, Discovery Zone, allows you to explore learning opportunities to suit you.

We cover the full costs of any professional development required in your role and offer career loans to help those who want to develop outside of their role. We’re also part of a cross-charity mentoring scheme.

Equality and Diversity

We’re committed to a culture of inclusion, which means recognising we can only achieve our ambition for a fairer society through a continued effort to encourage diverse thinking and fair opportunities in the charity.

We do our best to identify and challenge inequality and to ensure everyone can bring their best authentic self to work each day.

We recognise the value of every individual in all aspects of our work and all our colleagues are expected to treat everyone with respect and fairness.

Diversity and inclusion are a key cornerstone of the charity’s culture, and we are committed to including everyone in supporting our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion action plan for this year.

We aim to take all reasonable steps to not unfairly discriminate in any way. We also work to prevent indirect discrimination by ensuring our policies and practices do not unfairly or unjustifiably limit opportunities for different groups of people.

We aim to ensure that diverse voices are continually reflected in decision-making and governance, and we provide safe spaces and regular opportunities for all colleagues to have a say on the issues that matter.
