Hoboken charter school a model; Students earn honors | Journal Entries

HoLa named model dual language program

The NJ Department of Education has named the Hoboken Dual Language Charter School a Model Dual Language Program, the only one of its kind in the state and one of only six Model Programs in the state. A celebration with a Pride Assembly and Global Citizen Award Ceremony took place on April 27.

Students in grades K-4 awarded badges to fellow students who best demonstrated the school's core value of Global Citizenship. Student musical performances were also featured.

Speeches were made by Mayor Ravi Bhalla, city council members as well as the Hoboken District Superintendent, Dr. Christine Johnson.

HoLa was one of only 5 schools in the state to receive the Model Dual Language designation, and the only charter school in the state to earn the distinction.

Soaring Heights Charter School ranked #1

Soaring Heights Charter School in Jersey City has been ranked the #1 "Best Public Elementary School" in Hudson County by the school data analyst company Niche.com. It was also designated the #4 "Best Charter Elementary School" in NJ. The school has long operated at maximum enrollment with 236 students in grades K-8 and maintained a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. It was one of the original 13 NJ charter schools founded in 1997.

Additional rankings for Soaring Heights on a national scale include: "Best Charter Middle Schools in America" - #185 of 2,684 (94th percentile); and "Best Charter Elementary Schools in America" - #226 of 3,206 (93rd percentile).

Students make honor roll

The following local students have been named to the honor roll at Mercersburg Academy.

Marco Malo of North Bergen, grade 9, was named a distinguished scholar (all grades of 90 or above) during the winter term at Mercersburg Academy and Christian Oberst of North Bergen, grade 12, was named a commended scholar (all grades of 85 or above) during the winter term at Mercersburg Academy.

Student named to Delta Mu Delta

Alyssa Grace Punzal of Jersey City has been inducted into the LIM College chapter of the Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business.

Elysian Charter School welcomes new director

Elysian Charter School announced that Susan Grierson, an administrator and educator with over 25 years of experience, has been named Director of the kindergarten through 8

grade charter school for the 2018-2019 school year. Ms. Grierson will succeed Harry Laub, Ph. D., who after over seven years heading the school, will be retiring.

Grierson joins Elysian from the South Orange Maplewood School District where she spent the last nine years, most recently as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and prior to that as Principal of the Jefferson Elementary School. She also has eight years of experience as principal and chief school administrator of the Learning Community Charter School in Jersey City.

NJTPA and Voorhees transportation center receive achievement award

The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University have received the Silver 2018 National Planning Achievement Award for Public Outreach from the American Planning Association (APA). The award recognizes the organizations' outreach program, Innovations in Public Engagement.

NJTPA and Voorhees compiled over 400 programs to engage with Millennials, low-income residents, and teens and individuals with limited English language skills.

The non-traditional approaches drew nearly 3,000 participants, exceeding the participation numbers from previous traditional engagement efforts.
