Russian forces took over the villages of Spirne and Novooleksandrivka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, according to the Russian news agency RIA.

Russia's defence ministry said its forces had "liberated the settlement" of Novooleksandrivka as the Russian army pushes further westwards into the Donetsk region.

The village, which lies north-west of occupied Ocheretyne, is now the most western point of the region that Moscow holds.

Russian authorities also said their forces captured the small village of Spirne, further north in the Donetsk region near the border with the neighbouring Lugansk region.

Moscow has claimed new villages in the east of Ukraine regularly for weeks, as outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian forces struggle to hold them back.

On Saturday, Russian troops took control of  the settlement of  Shumy in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian troops have been particularly vulnerable since late last year because of major delays in European and US arms deliveries, according to AFP.

Sunday is day 858 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
