Chronicle Reviews

Chronicle should be the shining example for any filmmaker or studio wanting to make a “found footage” movie that’s more than just a gimmick.

There are some good lines in the picture, and the final action sequence is fantastic. It’s just a shame that this "fresh" look at super-powers features so many things we’ve seen before.

As occupied with actual characters as it is with inventive set-pieces, Chronicle has set a mighty high benchmark for the big boys of summer to live up to. And it's done it with a fraction of the purse.

'Chronicle' is a truly innovative film that, out of nowhere, engages the needs of this genre with great enthusiasm. [Full review in Spanish]

It is located in the second highest position of the abused "genre" that has been found-footage. [Full Review in Spanish]

Although the crashing climax left me cold, I was generally impressed by the youthful enthusiasm of the filmmaking in Chronicle.

The found footage technique pays off for a crackerjack confrontational climax...

Chronicle is like a geeky kid's wet dream.

Happily, and to my surprise, Chronicle's turns out to provide quite a bit of genre fun, and a touching little parable to boot.

The format seems like more of a hindrance, a pointless gimmick that ultimately leads nowhere.

Chronicle may be spare parts from different genres, but it manages to feel fresh and fun - well, at least as fun as it can get in a film with a seriously dark edge.

Yes, Chronicle is sort of sci fi, and reminded me of an old Stephen King novel called It. But what interested me most was the quick leaping interplay between the teens.

Chronicle is a refreshing take on a certain kind of lore, with a point of view that is both novel and well-conceived.

For all its good will and early invention, it sadly peters out into a messy, cross-city fight scene and overly-sentimental finale.

If only all superhero origin films were so dynamic, arresting and realistic.

All the images in the film are supposedly recorded by one of its characters... At first this tired technique is somewhat annoying, but it eventually goes a long way in bringing the viewer into the story.

[Chronicle]'s approach delivers a fresh take on superhero genre and its attitude should appeal to its YouTube generation target audience.

Trank's debut feature treats the audience to a deluge of teen angst, power trips, comradeship and rivalry yielding an insightful look into the unstable machine driving humans' wills and desires.

A found-footage film, like 'Blair Witch,' combined with 'Bowling for Columbine.' Instead of witches and guns, it's a teen outcast with supernormal abilities; like 'Carrie' with shaky-cam and cool CG.

Somewhere amidst a jumble of fast images and unscripted shouts, I couldn't help but feel that this all would have been more effective in a movie that played the material with a more straightforward approach.
