What to Know

Critics Consensus

Startlingly disturbing despite its outwardly fuzzy appearance, Eric is a perverse genre-bender that may not fully articulate all of its ideas but offers a memorably demented binge.

Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) The soundtrack alone... it's a real celluloid jukebox soundtrack. Jun 5, 2024 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine It’s only the quirkier half of Eric, an unfocused, inconsistently written, and wonderfully acted show whose ambition is admirable and originality rare in an increasingly formulaic crime genre. Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Diane Carson KDHX (St. Louis) With enough issues for several series, “Eric” masterfully interweaves personal and professional crises with incisive, sobering social critiques devoid of melodramatic exploitation. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Romey Norton Film Focus Online Overall, Eric is a seriously entertaining series, with twists, turns and torment. One of Benedict Cumberbatch’s more interesting performances - it’s not one to miss. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Jenny Nixon Common Sense Media There's so much going on here it feels like two shows are happening at once -- and despite the star power of Cumberbatch, it's the supporting players who command the most interest and attention. Lisa T With powerful performances this is a captivating and uncomfortable series. The dichotomy of the unseen ( some beneath the streets) and the wealthy. The powerful and the powerless. Our dysfunction is on display. I understand why critics prefer this more than we plebs. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review William F Terrible grim tale of a runaway child in NY. The 'happy ending' is hardly happy and one has been through such agonies in a dysfunctional family in the meantime that one can hardly believe in an upturn. Cumberbatch is good, and I loved his puppet-show Good Morning Sunshine (which also hits the rocks) but watching those three, the boy and his parents, not drifting but plummeting apart, makes one wonder whether there can be any redemption. The real theme is fathers and sons, how close, how loving, how trusting, the relations can, or should, be. Cumberbatch as the father comes out thoroughly chastened but I felt kinda sorry for him. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/31/24 Full Review DMC M it was too long. Acting was good. Cumberbatch was a little over the top, but did a good job. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Daven C Just awful. People whose son has been apparently kidnapped off the street would never, never act the way these two parents do — go to work to pitch puppets ? Solo dance dreamily in one’s living room with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc? Geez, this is laughably bad - not a single likable or realistic character. One finds oneself wishing that any one of them falls on the NYC subway’s third rail. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Craig B Eric is absolutely outstanding. Driven by superb performances from the always reliable Benedict Cumberbatch and McKinley Belcher III and a superb supporting cast, this is a truly brilliant limited series with so much heart. Not to be missed by those who enjoy a great drama story with a splash of fantasy and crime mystery. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/12/24 Full Review Esteban T Nothing happens, boring, the story is just not believable and you just can't get engaged at all and it is way to long Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
