Preserving the past, looking to the future
Recently, the university was honored by both the state of South Carolina and the Midlands nonprofit Historic Columbia for its historic preservation efforts. In June, USC Columbia and USC Union were both recognized by the S.C. Department of Archives and History for their work in preserving, restoring and renovating buildings. Historic Columbia also honored the university’s Columbia campus with two awards: one for preservation, rehabilitation or restoration for Longstreet Theatre and one for revitalization for Campus Village.

U101 instructor of the year calls on lifetime of experiences to guide students
Kitty Sutton began her professional life as an attorney and thinks the lawyerly ability to hear a person’s story without passing judgment is part of what makes her successful as a University 101 instructor. In fact, her students were so impressed with Sutton’s skills that she is the 2024 recipient of the M. Stuart Hunter Award for Outstanding Teaching in University 101.

USC joins STARS College Network
The University of South Carolina has joined the STARS College Network, a coalition of 32 of the nation’s most prominent institutions dedicated to ensuring that students from rural and small-town America have the information and support they need to enroll and graduate from the college or university of their choice.

Inaugural director excited about Carolina Experience
Amber Fallucca is the inaugural director of the Carolina Experience, which will focus on the undergraduate experience past the first year — for transfer, sophomore, junior and senior students. As a coordinating office, they will collaborate with a variety of campus offices to elevate the entire student experience at USC.

What's changing with Parking and Transportation Services this fall
The University of South Carolina’s Parking and Transportation Services department will begin selling parking permits on July 1 with increased pricing, fees and a few other changes to how you park on campus.
USC expanding tuition assistance program
USC’s tuition assistance program, which was already available for full-time equivalent (FTE) positions, is now be available for research grant and time-limited employees.
Administration and Governance
The university has several leadership groups working together to further the school's long-term objectives and goals.
Board of Trustees: Manages the university with well-defined standards and orderly oversight. Discharges its duties through ratified bylaws, adopted policies and board documentation.
Faculty Senate: A governing body established by the Board of Trustees with representative faculty members selected by each college or school. Senators are elected for a three-year term in the spring that begins the following fall semester.
President: Michael Amiridis draws on experience as a faculty member, academic administrator and higher education leader to guide South Carolina into its next era of success.
Provost: Donna Arnett oversees the schools and colleges of the USC Columbia campus and is charged with overall leadership of academic affairs.
Staff Senate: Facilitates communication and collaboration among university staff members and serves as an advisory committee to the president in strategic conversations.

Assisting Students
USC designs and provides comprehensive resources to support students’ academic achievements, well-being and campus experiences.
Academic Advising & Coaching: Advisors help students define and achieve goals from freshman year to graduation, this includes individualized and ongoing learning support.
Basic Needs: The CommUnity Shop provides food, clothing, toiletries, school supplies and other essentials to individuals experiencing basic needs insecurities.
Civil Rights and Title IX: Report discrimination, harassment or sexual misconduct. This office provides support regarding the fair and equal treatment of every person in the university community.
Mental Health Resources: Online, in-person and self-care resources help students improve their mental health by identifying and managing contributing factors from sleep and substance use to academic concerns and stress to grief and loss.
Student Disability Resource Center: This office ensures that students with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations and access to all aspects of the USC experience.
Student Success Center: A one-stop resource for academic support, including tutoring, peer writing, study skills and money management. Transfer and sophomore students will find tailored support here, too.
Professional Development
