BOYS GOLFER OF THE YEAR

New season. New coach.

Same results.
Led by senior Ryan Dornes and under the direction of first-year
coach Steve Brenner, who took over for Skip Walters after 30-plus
years at the helm Manheim Township (with another undefeated
record) steamrolled to its 10th straight Section One title, its eighth L-L
crown in the last nine years and its fourth straight District Three Class
AAA team title.
The highlight along the way was provided by Dornes (L-L-best 71.9
stroke average), who became the first person since the L-L was
founded in 1972 to win four straight L-L League individual titles. The
four-time medalist during the Section One season ended his stellar
high school golf career by finishing second at the District Three Class
AAA Championships and second at states after losing in a playoff to
Pennsburys Vinay Ramesh after rounds of 71-74.
The Blue Streaks were backed all season by juniors Walker Kirk (75.3
stroke average, fifth at the L-L Championships), Chris North (76.1, tied
for second at L-Ls) and Peter Chieppor (76.9, tied for second at L-Ls).
On the girls side, Manheim Centrals Haley Goodling, a three-time
Section Two medalist (even among the boys, and the only female to
make the L-L All-League team) again lived up to her billing, finishing
second in the L-L girls tournament, third in the District Three Class
AAA individual tournament and tied for 10th at states.

In addition to winning four Section One tournaments
this fall, when the Blue Streaks captured their 10th
straight section title and their eighth L-L League team
crown in the last nine years, Dornes became the first
player in history to win the L-L boys individual title
four consecutive times. After finishing runner-up in the
District Three Class AAA Championships, Dornes ended
his stellar career by losing in a playoff at the PIAA Class
AAA Championships. Dornes has committed to play golf
at Penn State in the fall.

Girls Championships and third in the District Three
Championships before earning a tie for 10th in

third straight LNP Female Player of the Year honor
for Goodling, who has committed to play golf at
Monmouth University next fall.

Field Hockey
Penn Manor gets to mountaintop;
memorable district title for Donegal
While the 2014 Lancaster-Lebanon League season may have ended in a familiar way Penn Manor hoisting its fifth league
trophy in six years the postseason was anything but predictable.
Donegal, after a game-tying goal from Amanda Robinson with just 2.1 seconds to play, won its fourth district crown in
school history on a 4-3 penalty stroke advantage.
In the state tournament, Penn Manor dethroned two-time defending champion Lower Dauphin in the quarterfinals
before playing to a 1-1 tie with Palmyra, giving the PIAA its first co-champions in 20 years.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Cassie Kline
Penn Manor
Out for almost four weeks with a broken
thumb that required surgery, Kline made a
difference in just her first game back, scoring
both goals as the Comets claimed their third
consecutive Lancaster-Lebanon League title.
No goal was bigger than her game-tying
score with 4:20 left in the state championship
that earned the Comets a share of the PIAA
crown.
Kline, who will play at Penn State next year,
led Penn Manor in scoring (21 goals, 9 assists)
and finished just two goals short of the
league leader, Donegals Rachel Robinson.
For her career, the forward finished with 48
goals and 42 assists.
Cassie is a complete field hockey player,
Comets coach Matt Soto said. She has great
goal-scoring abilities as well as playmaking
skills and is a gritty defender and knows what
it takes to win games and championships.
Cassie helped to lead a team, which lost
eight senior starters to graduation, with grit,
determination and great skills all the way to
the state championship.

the sidelines, Swarr took over
a young L-S squad featuring
just four seniors that finished
last season 4-13-1. The former

Section Two and their first L-L
League Tournament berth since
2011.

The McCaskey boys sent head coach Bob Ernst out in style, running
undefeated through the Lancaster-Lebanon Leagues regular season for
the third time in Ernsts 29 years as the programs head coach. Meanwhile,
Hempfields boys and girls teams collected postseason hardware,
winning league titles, with the boys capturing the District Three crown.

by senior Bri Thomas, captured the girls team championship after
matching Ephrata with a 20-1 regular-season record. Donegal finished
a perfect 10-0 in Section Two races and qualified for the PIAA Class AA
meet for the first time in program history.

FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

An enthralling season,
from start to finish
The 2014 L-L football season certainly lived up to expectations:
n Mike Williams retirement as head man at Manheim Central.
n The return of title-winning head coaches Jim Cantafio and Gerry Novak
as assistant coaches.
n The emergence of successful first-year bosses in Solancos Tony Cox
and Pequea Valleys Mike Choi.
n Hard-fought races in each of the leagues three sections.
All these things highlighted a campaign that provided intrigue
from start to finish.
Section Two, bolstered by the addition of former Section Three champions
Lancaster Catholic and Garden Spot, featured the most competitive race in
league history, one that saw five of the eight teams still in contention in the
final weeks of the campaign. Led by one of the L-Ls top QBs in Collin Bear
Shank, Lampeter-Strasburg emerged as the champion for the first time
since 2011, beating fellow contender Garden Spot in the 10th and final week.
Cocalico overcame late-season injuries to advance to the District Three Class
AAA championship for the first time since 2010.
Wilson earned its league-record seventh straight Section One title despite
returning just three starters, all on defense. The Bulldogs fought off late
challenges from Manheim Township and Penn Manor to emerge as the L-Ls
lone undefeated team during the regular season. QB Jake Templin, a first-year
starter, set a program record for TD passes in a season and Wilson ran its
record to 14-0 en route to a District Three Class AAAA championship and, at
time of this writing, a berth in the state semifinals.
Paced by play-making QB Isaac Ray, Northern Lebanon won Section Three
with a 9-1 record and claimed its first title since 1991. The Vikings became
Section Threes third different champion in as many years and Northern
Lebanon advanced to the postseason for the fifth time in program history.

leading it through a historically competitive
Section Two schedule to its first winning
season and first District Three Class AAA
playoff berth since 2007.

Wilsons Doug Dahms returned just three

starters, all on defense, but guided his
Bulldogs to a league-record seventh
consecutive Section One title and another
District Three Class AAAA crown. At the time
of this writing, Wilson is 14-0 and in the state
semifinals for the second time in three years.

Wilsons senior QB set a program

fall, surpassing the record set by

NFL QB Chad Henne. Templin also
led the Bulldogs to a record seventh

BOYS SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Lancaster Mennonite gets to state title cusp;

Elizabethtown wins first league gold
Success without rewards, at least in the sense of hardware, was the story for Lancaster
Mennonites boys soccer team.
The Blazers, after going undefeated to win a second straight L-L League Section Three
title, were eventually stopped in the L-L semifinals (by Manheim Township), the District
Three Class AA semifinals (by Fleetwood) and the PIAA Class AA championship game (by
Holy Ghost Prep).
Two-time All-State pick and senior forward David Alejos was the driving force, along with
senior Ian Burkhart and a slew of others.
With Mennonite out of the L-L title picture after its semifinal loss to Section One champion
Township, Elizabethtown which won its first Section Two title since 2003 upended the
Blue Streaks in a 1-0 tug of war to capture its first L-L League boys soccer championship in
program history.

GIRLS SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

find success at district level
The 2014 season was notable for the success of the Manheim Central and Elizabethtown
programs. Manheim, the L-L Section Two champion, and section runner-up E-town both
experienced first-ever postseason success in the District Three tournament, the Barons
advancing to the Class AA semifinals, the Bears to the AAA finals. E-town swept to the PIAA
semifinals before falling to the eventual Class AAA champion, while Manheim was eliminated in a
heartbreaking quarterfinal decision in Class AA.

driving force in a history-making season
for the Barons.
Her career-best 14 goals, along with 6
assists, were an integral part of a 205-2 Barons season that included an L-L
Section Two championship, a third-place
finish in the District Three Class AA
tournament and a first-ever appearance
and victory in the PIAA tournament.
A two-time All-State honoree and threetime All-L-L selection, West will continue
her playing career collegiately at Division
I Mount Saint Marys. She finished her
scholastic career with 41 goals and 31
assists.

A veteran of 27 years in the coaching ranks, across all

levels of soccer, John Shetromph guided the Manheim
Central girls to the best season in school history.
They achieved much more than they collectively
thought was possible, he said.
The Barons posted a school-record 20 victories playing
a Class AAA schedule as an AA program. They won
the L-L Section Two title the second section title in
program history while going unbeaten in section
play, and advanced to their first-ever L-L League
Tournament championship game.
The first Barons side to advance beyond the Round
of 16, they finished third in the District Three Class

Hempfield rises, as do
Elizabethtown, Cocalico
and Solanco
The 2014 season was eventful for several reasons. Hempfield, which won
L-L League and District Three titles, made a fifth straight trip to the PIAA
Class AAA championship match. Elizabethtown fashioned an undefeated
Section Two season and Cocalico, in its first season in Section Three, won
its first section title. In Section Two, Solanco showed a nice improvement
from last season to this season, going from 5-7 to 7-3.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Marrisa Wonders
Wonders made a smooth transition from parttime setter as a sophomore to full-time this past
season, directing the Black Knights offense. She
was deft at moving her sets to various spots on
the net to avoid the block. She chipped in with
enough dumps to keep from telegraphing her sets.
She was also a presence along the net as one of
the Black Knights blockers.

Seniors took center stage on the courts throughout the fall season.
Penn Manors Katina Jones and Lancaster Catholics Elizabeth Lil
Veronis capped their prep careers by repeating as league champions
and claiming district titles in singles play. Meanwhile, the senior-heavy
Lampeter-Strasburg lineup won the programs first-ever team title and
pushed its way into the postseason.

Lampeter-Strasburg
Miller coached Lampeter-Strasburg to
the best season in program history, as
the Pioneers posted a perfect 11-0 league
record to capture the Section Two crown.
They also had a 15-0 regular-season
mark. The success continued into the
postseason, as L-S knocked off Section
One powers Hempfield and Manheim
Township for its first-ever league
championship. Lampeter-Strasburg went
on to win district gold at doubles, where
seniors Sarah Sambrick and Tori Schultz
claimed the Class AAA title.

teams, will look to do so. Can Manheim Townships girls basketball team defend its title
without standouts Alexandra Leslie and Kaitlyn VanTash? Well track Bloomsburg recruit
and returning PIAA 4th-place finisher Bo
Spiller as he leads a group of L-L wrestlers that
includes Joe Lobeck and Will Finkey, striving

to make their mark throughout the season.

Hempfield and Lancaster Catholic will try
to defend its section titles in boys swimming and Manheim Township and Cocalico
will try to do the same in girls swimming.
Elizabethtown has a state title to defend in
girls bowling and Penn Manor will try to repeat as league champs. Manheim Central returns three All-Stars to its rifle team. Ready,
set, lets go inside for some winter sports.
