 Here’s a look at the Data Domain product family for the DD OS 5.4 release.
• Notice the four new models we will discuss in further detail in this course:
• DD2500, DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200
• Additionally, a new ES30 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) HDD Expansion Shelf will ship with
all new orders of these four models.

 EMC continues to offer these additional Data Domain software options in conjunction with
the DD OS 5.4 release:
• EMC Data Domain Boost software option
• EMC Data Domain Retention Lock software option
• EMC Data Domain Replicator software option
• EMC Data Domain Virtual Tape Library software option
• EMC Data Domain Encryption software option
And,
the EMC Data Domain Extended Retention software option, which enables long-term
retention of backup data, is now available on the DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200 (as well as
on the existing DD860 or DD990 models.)

For System Management:

• Data Domain System Manager, formerly known as Enterprise Manager, provides
configuration wizards to simplify the steps required to deploy a system into
production, dramatically reducing initial setup time.
• Data Domain Management Center streamlines the management, monitoring, and
reporting of multiple Data Domain systems through dashboards and “at-a-glance”
aggregated views.

 This new generation is built for midrange to large enterprises.

Specifically, there are four new systems – the DD2500, DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200.

All the new systems are based on Intel Sandy Bridge processors, enabling up to 4x faster
performance than the previous generation. They also provide up to 3x increased stream
counts.

In addition, support for the new 2 TB and 3 TB ES30 SAS expansion shelves enables up to
10x greater scalability compared to the previous generation.

 Here are some key platform changes to be aware of:
• Introducing a new persistent Product Serial Number Tag (PSNT) which will be used
only on the new models (not ported to legacy platforms)
• PSNT is persistent for each installation, even on a chassis swap.
• New Storage Processor(SP) Module form factor
• Data Domain is adopting EMC’s IO Module form factor
• The slot numbering for IO cards has changed. IO cards are numbered starting from
slot 0 moving from left to right.
• WWN format has changed to comply with EMC standards.
• System ID is derived from the WWN seed. The format of the System ID is different
on these new platforms.
• Automatic firmware upgrades are now integrated into DD OS.
• BIOS is initialized in local time. Previous platforms used GMT.

 Introducing a new form factor for IO modules -
Starting with DD OS 5.4 and only for DD2500, DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200
these IO modules come in a new form factor:
• 6 Gbit/s SAS-2, quad port
• 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel, dual port
• 1 GbE quad port RJ-45
• 1 GbE dual port RJ-45 + dual port SFP optical
• 10 GbE, dual port both copper and optical
• 4GB/2GB NVRAM with BBU module

Why a new IO Module form factor type?

• Smaller form factor than standard PCIe cards
• Very easy to service because IO Modules can be installed/removed from the rear
without the need to open the system chassis
• Cost effective, aligning with EMC’s standard form factor

 New ES30 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) HDD Expansion Shelf -
For DD2500, DD4200, DD4500, DD7200 Only

DD7200 and DD OS 5.4 and greater only)
 15 drives, RAID 6 (12 +2 + 1)
 2 TB: 30 TB Raw provides ~24 TB usable
 3 TB: 45 TB Raw provides ~36 TB usable
 SAS, 3 Gbit/s, 7200 RPM, 3.5 HDD
• Same performance and operational characteristics as ES30 SATA HDD Expansion
Shelves
• No impact on data-in-place upgrades
 New controllers support combination of ES30 SAS, ES30 SATA and ES20 SATA
shelves for controller upgrades
 No support for 8TB ES20 shelves
• New 3U ES30 SAS shelves are not supported on legacy systems
• Requires shelf capacity license and DD OS 5.4

 Improved reliability, serviceability, and business drivers such as aligning with EMC standards
are the reasons why we are moving to SAS drives.

 Along with these new model-specific rules….
here are some general SAS shelf configuration rules:
• Do not mix SAS-based ES30 shelves with any other shelf type in the same set.
• A set is the group of shelves connected together and to the same Data
Domain system’s controller ports.
• Do not mix ES30s and ES20s in the same set.
• For redundancy, the two connections from a Data Domain system to a set of shelves
must use ports on different SAS HBAs or SAS IO modules.
• Use the Installation and Configuration Guide for your controller to minimize the
chance of a cabling mistake.
• A Data Domain system cannot exceed its maximum raw external shelf capacity,
regardless of added shelf capacity.
• Do not exceed the maximum shelf configuration values for your Data Domain
system
as listed in the EMC Data Domain ES30 Expansion Shelf Hardware Guide P/N
302-001-163.

 The new DD2500 provides up to 4x faster performance, 4x more scalability, and 3x more
stream counts than it’s predecessor, the DD640.

The DD2500 enables users to backup 175 TB in under 8 hours with up to 13.4 TB/hr
aggregate ingest performance with DD Boost.

The DD2500 has two capacity configurations:

• 7 x 3 TB HDDs, ~11.2 TB usable
• 12 x 3 TB HDDs, ~25.9 TB usable

This scalable system supports up to four 30TB ES30 SAS expansion shelves or three 45TB
ES30 SAS expansion shelves, enabling customers to protect up to 6.6 PB logical capacity and
133 TB usable capacity in a single namespace.

In addition, the DD2500 can be the target for up to 180 backup streams, enabling
consolidation from up to 180 remote sites or the ability to emulate up to 180 virtual tape
drives on a single system.

 DD2500 License and Memory Requirements

Expanded Capacity –
• Both DD2500 capacity configurations (7 HDDs or 12 HDDs) will ship with an Expanded
Capacity license key that will be enabled in the factory.
Memory –
• Additional memory will be required when the DD2500's usable capacity is greater
than 51 TB.

A system contains either 7 or 12 SAS HDDs and a system with:

• 4 x 8 GB DIMMs installed supports 1 x ES30-30TB SAS shelf.
• 8 x 8 GB DIMMs installed supports up to 4 x ES30-30TB SAS shelves or 3 x ES30-45TB
SAS shelves for up to ~133 TB of maximum total usable capacity.

Now let's take a closer look at DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200.

 Compare and contrast new models with previous generations.

Notice a few first-time differences in this chart for the new models –
• The ‘Data-less Head’ units use Solid State Drives(SSD) for Hard Disk Drives.
• The three drives in the head are mirrored (triple 1) or RAID 6 for redundancy
• SSDs have inherently higher mean time between failures (MTBF), so there is no
need for a spare in the head unit
• Reminder: there are no spares on the DD990 either
• The system requires 220 Volts AC.
• The new platform for DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200 uses a new type of DB9 serial
cable – the micro DB9 to standard DB9. No support for VGA/PS2. No support for
standard to standard DB9 serial connector. A short length micro DB9 to standard DB9
cable is supplied.
• New IO Module form factors.
• New Mini-SAS High Density cables.

Let’s learn more about why the ‘Data-less Head’ units use Solid State Drives(SSD) before
diving into more detail on each model.

 The new ‘Data-less Head’ models (DD4200, DD4500, and DD7200) use SSDs as head unit drives for
storing the boot image, the DD OS image, SSD firmware, and logs for fault analysis.
• SSD drives used in new systems have been qualified from two suppliers.
 Both vendor drives can be mixed in one Head Unit.
 Both vendors support EMC S.M.A.R.T attributes standard and firmware upgrade
capability. (SMART= Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology)

Industry trend is towards SSDs because they:

• Provide better IO performance
• Dramatically improve random read/write
• Generally, traditional HDDs could achieve several tens of MB/s sequential read/write
performance, and a much lower random read/write performance due to its mechanical
positioning system (rotating motor and spinning plate) during data access.
• However the electric nature of SSDs could achieve several hundreds of MB/s sequential
read/write performance, and the similar random read/write performance without the
moving mechanical components.
• Are less susceptible to physical shock
• Provide more reliability (no physically rotating parts to get damaged); higher mean time
between failures (MTBF)
• Lower power consumption; are greener
• Are silent

Next, let’s learn more about the DD4200, DD4500, and the DD7200 systems - starting with the DD
4200 system.

 The new DD4200 provides up to 4x faster performance, 10x more scalability, and 3x more
streams than it’s predecessor, the DD670.

The DD4200 enables users to backup 175 TB in under 8 hours with up to 22 TB/hr aggregate
ingest performance with DD Boost.

The base of this scalable system supports up to 8 expansion shelves of 2 TB or up to 5 expansion

shelves of 3 TB, which enables customers to protect up to 9.4 PB logical and 189 TB usable
capacity in a single namespace – this includes support for both 2TB and the new 3TB ES30
expansion shelves with these conditions:
– New orders - Factory ships only ES30 SAS Shelves, with 2TB or 3TB HDDs
– DD4200 also supports legacy ES20 and ES30 SATA Shelves
– SAS and SATA shelves cannot be mixed on the same set
With the Data Domain Extended Retention software option, this scalable system can support up
to 24 expansion shelves, which enables customers to protect up to 28.4 PB logical and 569 PB
usable capacity for long-term backup retention.

In addition, the DD4200 can be the target for up to 270 backup streams, enabling consolidation
from up to 270 remote sites or the ability to emulate up to 270 virtual tape drives on a single
system.

Finally, the DD4200 is a ‘Data-less Head’ system, enabling our customers a data-in-place
upgrade from previous ‘Data-less Head’ systems including the DD690, DD880, DD860, and
DD890. Refer to EMC Data Domain System Controller Upgrade Guide (DD OS 5.4) P/N 302-001-160.

 Next is the new DD4500, which provides up to 2x faster performance, 2x more scalability, and 3x
more streams than it’s predecessor, the DD860.

The DD4500 enables users to backup 175 TB in under 8 hours with up to 22 TB/hr aggregate
ingest performance with DD Boost.

The base of this scalable system supports up to 12 expansion shelves of 2 TB or up to 8 expansion

shelves of 3 TB, which enables customers to protect up to 14.2 PB logical and 285 TB usable
capacity in a single namespace – this includes support for both 2TB and the new 3TB ES30
expansion shelves with these conditions:
– New orders - Factory ships only ES30 SAS Shelves, with 2TB or 3TB HDDs
– DD4500 also supports legacy ES20 and ES30 SATA Shelves
– SAS and SATA shelves cannot be mixed on the same set
With the Data Domain Extended Retention software option, this scalable system can support up
to 32 expansion shelves, which enables customers to protect up to 57 PB logical / 1.1 PB usable
capacity for long-term backup retention.

In addition, the DD4500 can be the target for up to 270 backup streams, enabling consolidation
from up to 270 remote sites or the ability to emulate up to 270 virtual tape drives on a single
system.

As with the DD4200, the DD4500 is a ‘Data-less Head’ system, enabling our customers a data-in-
place upgrade from previous ‘Data-less Head’ systems. Refer to EMC Data Domain System
Controller Upgrade Guide (DD OS 5.4) P/N 302-001-160.

 Finally let’s learn about the new DD7200, which provides up to 1.75x faster performance, 6x
more scalability, and 3x more streams than it’s predecessor, the DD890.

The DD7200 enables users to backup 208 TB in under 8 hours with up to 26 TB/hr aggregate
ingest performance with DD Boost.

The base of this scalable system supports up to 18 expansion shelves of 2 TB or up to 12 expansion

shelves of 3 TB, which enables customers to protect up to 21.4 PB logical and 428 TB usable
capacity in a single namespace – this includes support for both 2TB and the new 3TB ES30
expansion shelves with these conditions:
– New orders - Factory ships only ES30 SAS Shelves, with 2TB or 3TB HDDs
– DD7200 also supports legacy ES20 and ES30 SATA Shelves
– SAS and SATA shelves cannot be mixed on the same set
With the Data Domain Extended Retention software option, this scalable system can support up
to 56 expansion shelves, which enables customers to protect up to 85.6 PB logical and 1.7 PB
usable capacity for long-term backup retention.

In addition, the DD7200 can be the target for up to 540 backup streams, enabling consolidation
from up to 270 remote sites or the ability to emulate up to 540 virtual tape drives on a single
system.

As with DD4200 and DD4500, the DD7200 is a ‘Data-less Head’ system, enabling our customers a
data-in-place upgrade from previous ‘Data-less Head’ systems. Refer to EMC Data Domain System

The DD2500 system DIMMs are not hot swappable. A system contains up to 8 memory
DIMMs:
• DD2500 base configuration systems contain 4 DIMMs
 32 GB: CHAD0, CHBD0 CHDD0, and CHCD0
• DD2500 expanded configuration systems contain 8 DIMMs
 64 GB: CHAD0, CHAD1, CHBD0, CHBD1, CHCD0, CHCD1, CHDD0, CHDD1
The label on top of the SP module provides the DIMM location information.

NOTES:
• Only trained and qualified personnel should be
allowed to install or replace this equipment.
• During the procedure, wear a grounding wrist strap to avoid ESD damage to the
equipment.
• Replacement of a DIMM requires removal of the SP module. Never attempt service
while the SP module is still in the chassis.
• For replacement or upgrade DIMMs, use only DIMMs from a Data Domain memory

 Chassis Swap/Controller Differences
• In older platforms this description is completely interchangeable, as these both refer
to the same FRU. On newer platforms these are two separate FRUs. Normally the
term ‘controller’ refers to both the physical chassis and controller.
Chassis Swap
• Chassis is replaced with a completely new chassis. System identifiers and other FRUs
are all carried over to the new chassis. This is a rare process and will become very
rare in future platforms due to the separation of FRUs from the chassis.
Data Domain System Controller Upgrade
• Data Domain System is completely replaced with a newer supported model. The
HBA/NICs/NVRAM/ disks and other head unit FRUs will likely be completely different.

 Headswap
• The software process and steps used to restore configuration information during a
chassis swap or controller upgrade. This restores the bonding between the storage
and head unit.
SP Swap
• Replacement of the service processor for models that support this FRU.
• Since the original disks are maintained and all system identifiers (serial #, service tag,
system ID, etc…) are stored on the backplane, a headswap is not needed.
