Limitations in receiving GPS position signals and correction signals

Note:
Since the proper reception of correction signals depends on various factors (see below), we
recommend that a demonstration of the Auto-Guide system is always carried out at the
customer's fields before purchase to ensure proper operation of the Auto-Guide system.

The Auto-Guide system terminates tracking when

the correction signal is obstructed for more than
60 sec.
The GPS and correction signals can be
obstructed by dense trees, thickets, buildings,
high voltage power lines, etc.

The Auto-Guide system loses the correction

signal, if the correction signal satellite is less than
5 - 8 degrees above the plane of the antenna.
Note:
The correction signal satellite is over the
equator.

The Auto-Guide system terminates tracking, if the

number of satellites required for operation are not
available for more than 30 sec. Typically at least
5 satellites are required.
The GPS signal can be obstructed by dense

The Auto-Guide system can lose connection to

certain satellites, including correction satellites, if
the vehicle is operated on slopes; these satellites
are then outside the visible range of the antenna.

The Auto-Guide system steers the tractor and

NOT the implement.
Deviations in accuracy can occur if the implement
does not trail on-centre behind the tractor, for
example when it is pulled down a slope. Only
three-point implements can supply the necessary
accuracy in continuously changing terrain.

The correction signal's angle of incidence is

reduced the further north the vehicle is.
The Auto-Guide System could therefore have
reception problems in Scandinavia, the Baltic
States, Central Canada, Scotland and Northern
England.
This is especially true of hilly terrain, where
GPS signals are lost easily.

The GPS system is not available without

limitations in every location or around the clock.
This pertains particularly to applications that
require a high level of accuracy.
If a 'Poor' or 'Fair' signal quality is displayed in the
'Satellite Quality Forecast' screen on the terminal,
one can assume that high accuracy can only be
attained after a long time or not at all. In the worst
case, the system cannot be operated at all.

Latitude
Distance north or south of the earth's equator measured in degrees
Longitude
Distance east or west from the prime meridian measured in degrees
Altitude
The vertical elevation above sea level. Measured in US Standard or metric units.
Position Type
The quality level of the GPS position. The range is from lowest to highest: GPS, DGPS, DF-DGPS,
RT20FLOAT, RT2FLOAT, RT2FIXED)
In order to operate Auto-Guide, the indicator must show DGPS or better when the tractor is
outside
Satellites
Number of GPS satellites the ECU,GPS (electronics box in TopDock) is currently using.
should be between 5 to 12 satellites for good reception, the more the better.
Accuracy
Accuracy. An estimate of the distance between estimated position and true position. Measured in US
Standard or metric units
Shows static accuracy. The longer the Auto-Guide system runs, the more accurate it becomes.
Bearing
Heading of the tractor in relation to due north. Measured in degrees.
DMU Type
The type of DMU (gyrocompass) in the TopDock
DMU Packets / Sec

The number of readings received from the DMU per second.
70 readings per second or greater indicates 'good operation'.

The current estimate of the DMU roll bias
Wheel Angle Count

The current position of the Auto-Guide wheel angle sensor
A number indicating the angle of the front wheels. Changes as the front wheels move.
Terminal Version
Version number of the Auto-Guide Terminal
Controller Version
Version number of the ECU, GPS (electronic box in the TopDock)
VIU Version
Version number of the ECU, steering valve block (electronic box at steering valve block)
VIU Run Time

The total time that the ECU, steering valve block was enabled (hh:mm:ss) (hours/minutes/seconds)
VIU Control Time

The total time that the ECU, steering valve block has actuated the steering (hh:mm:ss)
(hours/minutes/seconds)
BSAC Serial Number

Serial number of the ECU, GPS (electronic box in the TopDock)
NovAtel Firmware
Version number of the GPS antenna (in TopDock)
Authorisation
Authorisation of the GPS antenna
Signal Quality
Signal quality of the current correction signal
Signal Lag
Signal lag. The amount of time elapsed since the last correction signal was received. Measured in
seconds.
Correction Packets
Number of correction packets received by the ECU, GPS
Correction source
Correction signal reception
Tracking means that a correction signal is being received and the Auto-Guide system is
operational
CommStatus
Connection (communication) between ECU, GPS and satellites
"UP" means that a connection (communication) has been established

A fault message advises of an event that deactivates Steering Assist, the driver must resume manual
control of the tractor

How does the local base station determine position?

Power on the Local Base Station.
Within the first approx. 3 minutes the GPS satellites do not always 'see' the Local Base Station in
the same position, but rather in various positions.
After approx. 3 minutes the Local Base Station determines an average from the various positions
This average is defined as the 'averaged position'.
The correction signal is calculated from this 'averaged position'.
Note:
A new average is calculated every time the power on the Local Base Station is cycled.
That means that the tractor then drives with an offset!!
This offset can be compensated for by entering a 'Wayline Offset' in the Auto-Guide Terminal
(see Auto-Guide Function Testing (brief instructions))

Ordering a "radio license" (applies to Germany)

Note:
The user of the Local Base Station is responsible for applying for a radio license (frequency as-
signment).
The operation of a Local Base Station without a radio license (frequency assignment) will be ad-
monished and can lead to prosecution.
Radio modules (data transmitters) are used to transmit correction signals between the Local Base Sta-
tion and the Auto-Guide tractor.
The radio modules (data transmitters) in Germany are operated with 0.5 watt power and a frequency of
430 MHz.
Every frequency used in Germany needs prior assignment by the Federal Network Agency
under Section 55, Part 1, of the Telecommunications Act (TKG).
There are fees for the assignment and use of frequencies
Fees for radio license (valid for Germany)

Assignment of a frequency approx. 120 euros (one-time)
Fees per Local Base Station (transmitter) approx. 20 euros (annually)

An average value is determined from this position data
The deviation between the "true position" and the "averaged position" is transmitted to the Auto-Guide
tractor via a radio module (radio) in the form of a correction signal.
Note:
After cycling power on the Local Base Station, it redetermines the position data
(approx. 3 minutes) and calculates an average value.
That means that it determines a new correction signal for itself
Which in turn means that the tractor then drives with an offset!
This offset can be compensated for by entering a 'Wayline Offset' in the Auto-Guide Terminal
(see Auto-Guide Function Testing (brief instructions))

The sensors inside the DMU measure angular rates and acceleration, in order to determine the precise

Implement width of 10 meters

Wayline offset of 0 (zero)
On flat, reasonably level ground, align the tractor at the start of the wayline.
Engage Auto-Guide Steering Assist and maintain a ground speed of approx. 7 km/h.
Drive at least 100 m along the wayline.
Turn around at the end of the wayline and align wheels in the same wheel tracks going the opposite
direction.
At the end of the second run, turn the tractor around again and align wheels in the same wheel tracks.
Wait at least 30 seconds. The Auto-Guide system performs a mean roll bias calculation in
these 30 seconds.

Types of faults
Solenoid valves have two typical kinds of faults:
The valve slider jams:
This fault can occur when the slider is in a neutral or extended position
Sliders usually jam due to build-up of small particles.
A fault occurs, if the solenoid valve has not been actuated over a longer period of time
The spring is broken:
The valve slider can no longer find a defined neutral position
This can be caused by leaking check valves

Installing pipes on the steering valve block, pressure compensator 2.V19 and pressure switch
2.S18
The pressure compensator 2.V19 compares the pressure of the load sensing pump with the
LS pressure from the steering valve block.
If the pressure from the load sensing pump is greater than the LS pressure from the steering valve
block, the pressure compensator closes proportionally.
Pressure switch 2.S18 , disengages the automatic steering when the steering wheel is turned
(steering servo unit). (The ECU, steering valve block switches off. Also see "ECU, measuring steering
valve block")
