THE DAILY ROUTINES OF A SPORT WOMAN

Janet is an athlete, and she wakes up at 4:30 am every weekday morning. She spends the
first 30 minutes reading and then 15 minutes meditating. At 5:15 am Janet checks her
email for only 30 minutes and then goes for her first run of the day. She runs for an hour
and a half along the lake near her house. After running, Janet has a shower and then
prepares breakfast, which is usually cereal and fruit. However, she occasionally has a
less healthy breakfast.
She usually finishes breakfast at around 8 am. If it is a weekday, she always leaves the
house at 8:20 and goes to training. Her training starts at 9 am, and she needs 30 minutes
to drive to the gym. She trains for 3 hours with her team and then goes home for lunch.
She always eats a very big and healthy lunch. As soon as she finishes lunch, she has a
nap for one hour.
After her nap, she likes to go for a walk around the lake and look at nature. She
sometimes reads or meditates at the lake in the afternoon. In the evening, during the
week, she meets up with friends. Most of her friends are athletes too, so they have a lot
to talk about.
She typically goes to bed at 9 pm because she prefers to be awake in the morning than at
night. She sometimes falls asleep listening to music, but she never watches the
television or reads anything on her tablet. She always makes sure her alarm is set and is
almost always asleep by 9:45 pm.

The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or normal.

Present Simple Tense – Negative Form
Negative Sentences in the Simple Present Tense
To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Don't or Doesn't with all verbs EXCEPT To
Be and Modal verbs (can, might, should etc.).
Affirmative: You speak French.
Negative: You don't speak French.
You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the subject
is I, you, we or they.
Affirmative: He speaks German.
Negative: He doesn't speak German.
When the subject is he, she or it, we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make a negative
sentence. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third
person) disappears in the negative sentence. We will see the reason why below.
Negative Contractions
Don't = Do not
Doesn't = Does not
I don't like meat = I do not like meat.
There is no difference in meaning though we normally use contractions in spoken English.

PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE – INTERROGATIVE FORM
To make a question in English we normally use Do or Does. It has no translation in Spanish though it is
essential to show we are making a question. It is normally put at the beginning of the question.
Question: Do you speak English?

You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to make it a question. We
use Do when the subject is I, you, we or they.
Question: Does he speak French?
When the subject is he, she or it, we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative sentence a
question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third
person) disappears in the question. We will see the reason why below.

Hi Ellie,

I’m so pleased you can come surfing in August! Paul, Rose, and Kevin are coming too, so there will be
five of us. We’ve decided to return to New Sands for a couple of days because the surfboard hire is so
cheap there.

I’m starting to think about accommodation. We won’t camp again after last year! I hated staying in a
tent in all that rain!

don’t really want to sleep with strangers.

There are a few guest houses in New Sands. Some have triple rooms, so we only need to book two
rooms. We’ll have to book soon if we choose that option because many guest houses are already full.
The hotels in New Sands are too expensive, although I’d love to stay at the Sunrise Pavilion with its
large pool!

The final option is to rent a cottage. I found one. It has three bedrooms – a double, a single and a twin,
so two of us would have to share a bed! There’s a big kitchen diner with a microwave, washing
machine and dishwasher. The living room has a TV and DVD player. There’s just one bathroom, but
there’s a separate WC. There’s a nice garden too. The problem is, it’s 5 miles from the beach.

What is an Object Pronoun?

An object pronoun is a type of personal pronoun that is normally used

as a grammatical object, either as the direct or indirect object of a verb,

The verb can is a modal verb. It does not take the letter–s-in the third person –he, she-it-
It does not form the negative/question form with Do/Does.
The verb can is always followed by the base form of the verb.

I. Read the text about the special talented family, then put one word into each gap to
complete the sentences in the exercise.

The Hodgson family from Texas, USA are probably the most talented family in the country. Thomas is the
father of the family. He's 52 years old and he can do everything. He can run for a long time. Every day, he
goes running in his neighborhood for 40 minutes. He can also swim very well. He swims for his state's
over-50 team! Thomas can't speak any foreign languages, but his wife, Judy, certainly can! She can speak
French, Spanish and even Japanese. And she can teach them too. She works at the Pinewood Language
Academy.

Thomas and Judy Hodgson have three children and they can all do many things too. Robbie, 23, can't run
for long distances like his father, but he can run very fast. He can run 100 meters in just 11 seconds.
That's very fast. ¡He can also fly! Not like a bird, but using a hang-glider. He goes hang-gliding every
weekend in the hills near the family home. The middle child is Janine, who is 19. She's similar to her
mother and she loves foreign languages. She studies Italian and French and can speak both of them very
well. When she's with her mother, they can speak French and nobody in the house understands them!

Clara is the baby of the family. She's only 9 years old. She can't speak French and she can't fly. What can
she do? She can bake the best cakes in the world! And her parents and her brother and sister can eat
them.

Online shopping

My name is Sara, and I love shopping online. I prefer mobile phone

apps, but sometimes I use my computer. The phone is more
convenient for me, and I can even do my shopping from bed!

I love shopping so much that I buy everything I need at home. I get

food, electronics, books, and even large pieces of furniture like my
sofa and bookshelves all online! But I still prefer getting clothes
from a store so I can try them on to be sure they fit me fine.

Yesterday, I bought a birthday present for my mother, and it arrived today! That saves me a lot of time.
I am a very busy person, and I am a little forgetful too. If I think of something I need, then it is
wonderful that I can buy it at that moment.

My friends aren’t as comfortable with buying things online as I am because they think that it can be
dangerous. Of course, bad things sometimes happen, but I am very careful with all my personal details.
I think the biggest fear that people have with using their credit cards online is that someone will steal
their number. It is important to be sure that the web page is secure. You can see this if the address has
got an “s” in it, like https://. That “s” means it is safe.

People should not be afraid of shopping online. I think it will be the only way we will do our shopping in
the future!
