bonds of friendship's chain, and to aid in spreading our ancient
Order, until everywhere where human foot may tread there shall

W. M.-Tbe first Chronjde of the Zuzimites is in the year of the

world, 2079, 1918 years before the Christian era, or 3800 years
ago, and we read in Holy Writ that they were a people great
and many, and of high stature, in fact, perfect giants.
The derivation of the word in the original Hebrew sigoifies
splendour and beauty.
Chaldee interpreters state that they were stout and valiant men,
and the Septuagint version of Holy Writ describes them as a
robust nation.
So as formerly with our ancient and honourable Order, so now
let us be a people great in good, works, and many in numbers,
perfect giants in virtue, let our splendour and beauty be that of
uprightness, and let us be an united body, a people valiant for
the Truth, and so shall our Order continue in the future tilJ time
shall be no more. Thus having heard this brief sketch of our
past history, are you still desirous to become one with us and are
you willing to take our life-long pledge.

left hand on your heart, raise your right hand to the glorious
firmament above, and. assent to this solemn vow.

I (name), do hereby promise, pledge and bind myself to sacred­
ly, zeaJously, religiously and faithfully obey all and every the
laws, rules and usages of this ancient and honourable Order. I
swear never to reveal, disclose, or make known, any of the
private work or business of the Order to anyone who has not
taken this solemn pied.ge, or who is not entitled to know the
same. I further swear never to wrong a Brother Zuz.imite. I bind
myself to d.o all in my power to promote the welfare of this
Order, and to zeaJously spread its principles through the entire
Uoiverse, and this I do, beiog fully cogoizant of my positioo, and
without reservation of any manner or kind, and in pain and
under the penalty, should I break this sacred vow, of having my
head cut off, my heart stabbed through, my eotrails drawn out,

existence. And now for your future guidance we will instruct you
in a few lessons of the Order. Bro. G., lead this seeker to our
Bro. S. W., who will administer to bis needs, and impact koowl­

S. W.-My Brother, you have just entered upon a most eventful
epoch of your life, you have taken our solemn pledge, and you
are DOW one with us, and therefore I DOW extend to you the right
hand of fellowship. (Shakes hands with him), but though one
with us, you are as yet but lik:e the puny infant just brought into
the great world. As yet you have only just caught the glimmer
of light which wiU eventually shine upon you in ali its radiency
of glory, You have only, so far, placed your foot on the lowest
rong of the zumitical ladder which contains 21 steps, over which
you may yet pass. In this our fust degree we teach friendship,
etcroal friendship.
FrienQShip is an attachment which rises neither from interested
designs or party zeal, but from fhat similarity of djspositions, that
corresponding harmony of minds which eodears some person to
our heart, and inclines us to take as much interest in bis cir­
cumstances, fortunes and fate as if th ey were our own.
Such friendships certainly are not unrea1, and for the honour of
human nature, it is to be boped that they are not altogether un­
frequent among mankind. Happy it is when th ey take root in our
ea.dy years and are engrafted on the ingenuous sensibility of
youtb. Frieodships thus contracted retain to the last a tender­
om an4 warmth seldom posscssed by such as are formed in the
riper periods of life.

The remembrance of ancient and youthful connections melts

every human heart, and the dissolution of them is, perhaps, the
most painfu1 feeling to which we are exposed here below. But,
at whatever period of life friendships are formed, so long as·
they continue sincere and affectionate, they undoubtedly form one
of the greatest blessings we can enjoy. They give a brighter
sunshine to the pleasing incidents of life, and they enlighten the
gloom of its darker hours.

It is justly and beautifully said, that a faithful friend is the

med.icine of life. A variety of occasions happen, wben to pour
forth the heart to one we love and trust, is the chief comfort,
perbaps the only relief we can enjoy. Miserable is be, who,
confined within the narrow enclosure of selfish interest, has no
person to whom he can at all times with full confidence expand
his soul.

W. J. W.-My brother, the fundamental qualities of true friend­
ship are constancy and fidelity. An inconstant man is incapable
of friendship. He may, perhaps, have affections which occasion­
ally glow in his heart, which excite fondness for amiable qual,ities,
or connect him with seeming attachment to one whom he esteems,
or to whom he is under obligation, but after these feelings have
continued for a while, either a fancied interest ajjenates, or some
new object attracts him, and be is no Jonger the same person to
those whom he once loved. Where there is no fixedness of mora!
principle occasional feelings are of no value; mind is of no effect;
and with such persons it is neYer desirable to have any connec­
tion. Wbere constancy is wanting, there can be no fidelity, which
is the only basis of true friendship, for all friendship supposes
entire con:fidence and trust. The seal of secrecy is to be inviol­
able, promises and engagements are to be sacred, and no advan­
tage of our own is to be pursued 3:t the expense of our friends'

and Brothers' hooour. An inconsistent man is despicable; a faith­

less man, base.

W. 1. P. M.-My friend, you have heard from our Bro. J. W. that
constancy and fidelity are the very essentials and essence of true
friendship, but supposing neither constancy nor fidelity to be
aJtogether wanting, still, however, ftiendship is in hazard of
sulfering from the follies and unreasonable humors to which we
are liable. It is to be regarded as a tend,er plant in an unfavorable
soil which, in order to flourish, requires to be reared and minded
with care. We ought never to expect perfection in any with
whom we contract friendship. If jn aoy person we trust to .tind
nothing but perfection, we may be assured that, on Jonger acquain-
tance, we sh.all meet w.ith disappointment. The best and most
estimable persons are those in whom the fewest material defects
are found, and whose great and solid qualities counterbalance the
common infirmities of man. To these good qualities we are to
look in forming friendships, to good sense and prudence, which
constitute the base of every respectable character; to virtue, to
good temper, to steadiness of affection, and, according to the
union of these dispositions, we should esteem ourselves happy
in the friends whom ,we choose. We ought not to be hurt by
<lifferences of opinion, arising in intercoucse with our Brethren. It
is impossible fot these not to occur. Perhaps no two persons were
CYer so exactly cast in the same mould, as to think ahyays in the
same manner on every subject. No man has any, right to erect
bis own opi.nions into an universa! and infafüble standard ; and
the more enlarged man's mind is, the more readily he will over­
look düferences in sentiments, so long as he is persuad.ed that
tbc mind ofhia friend is upright, and that he follows the dictates
of cooscience and integrity.

We ought to cultivate an openness of temper and manner.

Nothing more certainly dissolves friendship than the jealousy
which arises from darkness and concealment. If our situation
obliges us to take a different view than our Brother, let us •do it
openly. Mutual confidence is the soul of friendship. As soon as
that is destroyed, or even impaired, it is only a show of friendship
and fraternity that remains.

W. M.-My Brother, you have learned much already, but there is

still much more for you to be instructed in, and as you steadily
progress in our ancient, noble, and honourable Order, you will
find how valuable the instructions you here receive wil! prove.
I have a few more words to say, which wil! require your earnest
attention. As a Zuzimite you ought to cultivate in all your joter­
course with yow:. Brethren gentle and obliging manners. An
intimate connection can only be kept up by a constant desire to
be pleasing and. agreeable. The ordinary tenure of life is com­
posed of small duties and offices which we have daily, yea, hourly,
aye, constantly to perform, and it is only by rendering d,aily be­
haviour agreeable that we can long preserve the comforts of
friendship. We ought never to listen rashly to evil reports against
our Bretbren. When on proper grounds we have formed a con­
nection, let us be slow in believing anything against the friends
whom we have chosen. There is among mankind a spirit of
malignity, which too often takes pleasure in disturbing the
society of those who appear to enjoy the company of each other.
It forms part of the character of a Zuzimite that he .is not "prone
to take up a reproach against his neighbor." We ought never to
desert a Brother in danger or distress. When our Brotber is
caluminated, then is the time for us openly and, boldly t'o espouse
his cause, and we must do so; when his situation is changed, or
his fortunes are falleo, theo is the time of affording prompt and
zealous aid. When sickness or informity occasions him to be
neglect&d by others, that is the opportunity which every real
Zuzimite will choose and seize to redouble all the affectionate

attention whji:h love suggests. These are the important duties,

the sacred claims of friendship, which our Order enforces on
every Zuzimite.
We have various signs, tests, grips, signals, watchwords and ,
other secret work which you wil! now be instructed in; but be­
fore doing so, I require and charge you as a man, and as a Neo­
phite Zuzimite, upoo your soul, and upon your hopes of being
forgiven for your sins, to take upon yourself this further oath
and vow. Give me your right hand, and raise your left to the
fumamen@ above, and repeat after me.
I, ............. ., being free-bom and a perfect man, do
hereby further vow and swear, that having been so far instructed
in the arts and mysteries of this Ancient fraternity, I will always
conceal and never reveal anything that I have now leamt, or that
I may hereafter learn, or discover, or be taught relating to this
Order, or to any part thereof. That I will never write, indite ,
scribble, or make any sign or representation or suggestion of any
of the signs or other tokens or secrets of this Order upon paper,
linen, parchment, stone, iron or any other material, matter or
thing without the authoûty of a M. W. G. M. of this Order, in
writing, under his hand; and seal .first had and obtained, under
the penalty of having this left hand now raised stricken and
smitten by the lightning of the clouds; this right hand now so
firmly held forth stricken off at the joint by a sbarp two-edged
sword; this tongue now so glibly repeating these words torn out
by the roots; my eyes now perfect in sight being burnt out; and
my whole body hewn in pieces and cast upon a dunghill to rot
and putrify. So help me God.

I wil! now instruct you how to enter a Tent of our Order. Ad­
vance to the outer door. When it is dosed you will give •
knock, and to the Tyler thereat give the fust and last letters of

our watchword (just given you) , then clothe you r nakedness, and
having arrayed yourself in a becoming manner at the inner gate
give • knocks which signifies, and to the oflicer in
charge give the three middle letters of our watchword and the
pass-word for the current year. Advance to the centre of the
room, and, having taken the proper number of steps (6) give
the battery, then the sign, and take your seat. Should you wish
to rctire before our 'Tent is regulady furled, you salute the
W. 1. P. M. and give the fust and third letters of our watchword
to the W. Sentinel and quietly pass out.
The emblem of this degree is the ürcle, which signifies never­
ending friendship. Our Brother Guide will now clothe you with
the appropriate insignia you are now entitled to wear. Whenever
you put on this badge remember you are leaving the world, its
sins and sorrows its toils and its troubles, its riches and; its joys
bebind you, and that you are priviledged to enter and abide
within the folds of a Tent wbere brethren unitedly love and
cherish each other. Our Guide will now conduct you hence to
change your habiliments, and then aJlow you to freely enter and
intermingle with your brethren chaoged clothed, and, in your
right mind. (Writing test.)

known by all my acquaintances, companions and friends as a
shameless vagabond and a lying scamp. So help me God, and
keep me steadfast in this my soleron obligation, being that of a
Graduate Zuzimite.

Truth.
W. J. W.-Listen, my friend. Truth indeed carne once into the
world, and was a perfect shape, most glorieus to look on; but one
day, falling asl eep, there straight arose a wjcked race of deceivei:s,
and one narned Typhon took the Virgin Truth, surnamed ISIS,
hewed the Temple on which she ministered into a thousand
pieces and scattered them to the foor wwds. From that time, ever
since, i:he sad friends of Truth, sucb as durst appear, have made
careful search for her mangled body, and have gone up and down
gathering fragment by fragment still as they could find them.
Go then my Brother, and seek whether ye are more successful
than they.

that it is capable of perceiving truth, and that state is profound
serenity. Your mind is fevered by a desire for truth; you would
compel it to your embraces; you would ask me to impart to you
with(MJt ordeal Of preparation the grandest secrets that exist in
aatwe; but truth can no more be seen by the mind unprepared

for it, than the sun can dawn upon the midst of night. Such a
mind receives truth only to pollute it, to use the simile of one
who has wandered near to the secret of the sublime Goetia (or
the magie that lies within nature as electricity within the cloud.)

W. P. I. M.-A Brother said you? Then Jet that Brother lrnow
that he must travel far to find what he seeks, and must work
honestly and with integrity to do so, bewaring of falsehood, and
ever seeking with integrity, and acting with discernment, to
winnow the grain from the chaff; the false ones from the just.
And to aid him in his discernment let him remember that cheaters
must get some credjt before they can cozen, and all falsehood,
if not founded on some truth would not be fixed in our belief.

W. G.-We have sought in the North, the East, and the West, to
'find our prize and return, 0 M/aster having found it not.
W. M.-Whither hast thou travelled?
W. G.-From the desolate and ruined Temple of Isis to the groves
of Goetia, and by the rivers of Experience, and, yet we have
found it not.
W. M.-My Brethren, you have sought well, and it is now given to
me to discover the hidden gem of Truth to you, as it was in the
past given to our Captain Osiris, to find the body of Isis.
In the early days of our Order, our fore-fathers, seeking to
establish the borids of Friendship on a firm and sure foundation,
arose from their tents in the land of Aram and assembled them­
selves in grand; council together. Amongst others present was
Typhon, a fair-looking and promising youn.g man, who, coming

of good, family, was respected for the credit of bis ancestors by

our forefathers.
The Grand Council having the perpetuity of our Order engraven
as a first principle in their bosoms, elected the old and sage
masters to the posts of honour in the Tûbe, which they were best
qualified to fill, and Typhon the young and tboughtless was not
chosen among them.
Typhon and his youthful comrades and friends, being enraged
with this action of the Grand Council, withdrew from the en­
campment and renouncing the Tribe, made for the mountains,
there to brood over their fancied wrongs and prepare schemes of
vengeance. Meanwhile our forefathers in their meritorious zeal
to train up the young members of the Tribe in paths of rectitude
and Truth, erected a Temple (as beiog a. more permanent struc­
ture thaa the tents), and appointed five sages to instruct the
neophytes in the p�inciples of Truth, and appointed Isis, a young
virgin, to tend the altar fire, and keep it constantly burrung.
The Tribe then withdrew each man to bis own Tent, and
busied themselves with their regular occupations. Typhon and
his base companions watched their opportunity, and in the dead
of night surrouoded the Temple and burnt it to the ground, slew
the old Masters, smashed the Tables. of the Law into a thousand
minute particles, and carried off !sis, the darkness of the night
aiding them in theirfoul design. Great was the constemation
amongst our brethren; weeping and lamentation was heard
throughout the Camp, and many roamed over the adjacent coun­
try, vainly seeking some trace of the ravishers. One young Chief,
named Osiris, ,·owed never to return to the Camp until he had
traced the despoilers to their !air, and rescued Isis dead or alive
frorn thcir grasp, and leaving the camp, walked to the ruined
Temple, and the{e sat and med.itated over bis dangerous task.
Whilst walking, apparently listlessly, with his eyes dejectedly
cast down, he carne across a broken arrow, the point of the dart
of which pointed towards the groves of Goetia, and by some un-

controllable and unaccountable impulse he forthwith bent bis

steps in that direction, and arrived there in the gloom of the
evening. In order to better view the ·surrounding district, he
climbed a tree, and the darkness gradually increasing, resolved,. in
order to protect himself from the wil d beasts that abounded in
the district to make bis bed there for the night; and making him­
self as comfortable as possible, went to sleep. In the early morn­
ing he awoke, and descending from the tree saw something bright
lying on the ground. On going up to this he discovered it to be
a small silver star, which he recognized as having been worn by
Isis. Feeling oow confident he was on the right track, he looked
around, as if almost expecting to see the lost fair one and her
abductors close at hand, and hearing the rushing of water, went
in that direction and found a small cascade tumbling over the
the rocks. He followed the bed of this stream for many miles,
uotil it entered the river, and he still followed in this track until
darkness carne upon him, and he again sought repose; but he
could not sleep, and looking at the fast flowing river, saw in its
bosom the reflection of the moon's silvery face. Turning from the
river to the country, which in that part was almost desolate, he
saw what he thought were the ruins of an ancient city, and
thinking to be better sheltered from the midnight dew there than
in the open field he bent his steps thither, and on arrival, to his
great surprise, saw a small piece of cloth clinging to a thorn
bush, and this led bis curiosity to examine critically the adjacent
neighborhood, and, to his astonishment, he found an old and
apparently disused well, and leaning over the parapet, he saw,
by the aid of the moon, at the bottom thereof, what appeared to
be the body of a female.

Hastily unloosening his sash and making one end fast to the
masonry, he lowered himself down the wel!, and. found to
his inexpressible joy the body of Isis, still holding firmly clutch­
ed against her bosom the sacred papyrus, on whicb was inserted
the following sentence, "Truth is the foundation of all knowledge,
and the cement of all societies." He raised the maiden in his arms,

and by aJmost superhuman efforts, clambered out of the welJ,

and deposited what appeared to be the lifeless body of !sis on
the ground.Thus was the body of !sis discovered, and thus was
the hidden gem of truth once more restored to the tribe. Here­
after you wil! hear how Osiris returned to the tribe, and: how his
Jabors were su.itably recognised. At a Grand Council held short­
Jy after, it was unanimously agreed that the gem of truth, guaxd­
ed so well by !sis, and so miraculously cliscovered by Osiris,
should be taught to those of our brethrea who were suitable to
receive the same, and who by their labours and earnestness proved
that they, Jike Osiris, were readf and willing to go tbrough
toil and trouble to discover the lost gem of truth.
As you have so worthily acquitted· yourself this evening, I have
oow pleasuie in robing you with the insignia of this Degree,
and receiving you as a graduate amongst us.
The iosignia you are now entitled to wear is typical of the
joumey of our Brother Osiris on his search for Isis ( explain
here meaning of the border on apron). The sign of this Degree
is ...... typical of the descent and ascent of Osiris.The word
is . ... . . which was the name of the city amongst wbose ruins
Osiris found the body of !sis and the gem of truth. The import
of this word in the original Hebrew is young, fair and exemp­
lary, wbich, as you wil! perceive, at once reminds you of our fair
and young Brother Osiiis and his el(emplary conduct.

W. S. W.-Love, my Brother, bas been defined as a partial Ieaning
of the heart toward;s a particular object. lt is a natura! passion
of the human mind gjven to man for the most important pur-

poses. Although the affections often operate on the mind, yet

the conviction of the mind wil! be found to give the strongest
and most lasting bias to the affections. Our Jove of any object is
u ually preceded by a consciousness, arising from experience or
observation, that it possesses some amiabJe qualities which spon­
t:meously excite our kind regard; or that goodness under some
of its various forms, is a prevailing ingredient in its nature, and
one of its predominant d1aracteristics.

W. S. W.-Bro. W. I. P. M., this humble brother having been
instructed as to what love is, would learn more of its duties.
W. I. P. M.-My Brother, to embrace the whole creatioo with
Love sounds beautiful; but we must begin with the individual,
with the nearest. And he who cannot love that deeply, intensely,
entirely, how shouJd he be able to love that which is remote, and
which throws but feeble rays upon him frorn a foreign star?
How should he be able to love it with any feeling whid1 deserves
the name of love? The greatest cosmopolitans are generally the
need.iest beggars, and: they who embrace the entire universe with
love, for the most part love nothing but their narrow self.

W. M.-My Brother, you may have noticed; how you have travelled
in three lines frorn your entry to this Tent. This is typical of the
journey our Grand Master OSIRIS took on his return to Camp
after finding the lost body of Isis.
As a Graduate Zuzimite you wil! rernember that he found the 1
apparently lifeless body of Isis at the bottom of an unused well

in the ruined city of Zeboim, and you wili remember how he

rescued the fair maiden from what m.ight have been her tomb
and laid her pure body on the earth.
He then bathed her temples with some water obtained from a
pool in the neighborhood, and: having feit her breast was de­
lighted to discover that her heart sti Il beat slightly. He exerted
himself at once to the utmost of hi · ability to restore animation,
and finally did so, and was rewarded for his trouble by seeing
the fair maiden at length open her eyes and gaze dreamily a­
round.
"Where am I ?" she asked, and in reply our Brother OSIRIS
briefly informeel: her of what had passed, and theo enquired of
her whether she was strong eoough to accompany him back to
the Camp.
Poor !SIS was too weak to walk, and our Grand Master
OSIRIS was tberefore obliged to carry her in his arms; but here
another difficulty arose. He knew not the nearest way back to
the Camp, and consequently was at a considerable disadvantage.
While contemplating hjs predicament, he saw a pure white turtle
dove soaring in graceful circles in the air above his head .
The bird alighted near the couple and slowly walked a little
way in front of them. lnstinctively OSJRIS followed it, hearing
th.e body of 1srs in bis arrns. The bird: still kept ahead, some­
times fluttering, and sometimes walking, it led bim along over
comparatively level ground, until, to the surprise of OSIRIS, he
suddenly found himself within a short distance from the Camp.
The dove arose and flew suddenly away, .hut at the expiration
of about five minutes it returned with a Jeaf of dover in its
moufh which it dropt at tht1 feet of OSIRIS and soared away.
OSIRIS returned to the Camp, where his bravery and. intrepi­
dity were suitably acknowledged, and on the complete recovery
of the fair ISIS, her hand was given to him in marriage.
The sign of this degree is - - - . The emblems are the Torch
and Turtle Dove, with the sprig of dover in its mouth. The

Torch signifies the power of love, and also reminds us of our

obligation, and of the penalty of burning, should the same be
violated or broken.
The watchword of the degree is . . . . . . which was the name
afterwards given to the dove that so miraculously pointed, out
the path of deliverance to OSIRIS. The grip of this degree is

S. 0.-My Brother, in this degree we keep the duties and essen­

tials of affection. Affection may be defined as a settled bent of
the mind towards any particular being or thing and occupied a
middle place between disposition on the one hand and passion
on the other. It is distinguishable from dispositioo, which form­
ing a part of our original nature, must exist before there can be
an opportunity to exert it upon any particular object; whereas
affection can never be original, because having a special relation
to a particular object, it cannot exist till that object has been at
least once presented. It is also distinguished from passioo,
which depending on the real or ideal presence of its object;
whereas affection is a lasting connection, and like other connec­
tions, subsists even when we do not think of the object. That
there is such a thing as enthusiasm or fanaticism, misled by
ignorance, is not to be denied. Many baleful effects have resulted
from such enthusiasm. But because there are counterfeits of the
d.evout affections and abuses thereof, we are by no means to
conclude that all affections are delusive. There are counterfeits
to every virtue; but we are not to suppose that no virtue exists
among men. Whilst therefore we guard against fanaticism, let us
take heed lest we become insensible to the impressions of piety
and extinguish in our breast the flame of devotio.n. The man
who is a stranger to the devout affections, is a stranger to the
noblest feelings, and the sublimest enjoyment of which the heart
is susceptible. Genuine devotions daily cherished in the breast,
refines the sentiments, purifies the heart and exa1ts the soul. By
the daily exercisè of the pious affections the devout Z anticipates
on earth, in some degree, the pleasures of the Grand Tabernacle
in the sky and becomes more and. more meet to be translated to
the Society of the heavenly inhabitants. The S. G. will now con·

former OC01pation of the members of this degree was to overlook

or superintend the erection of the Tents of our people in their
wanderings through the wildemess, and as only married men and
heads of families were in possession of tents of their own, this
degree was only conferred. on such. The sign is given by elevating
the hands over the head allowing the tips of the fingers to just
touch each other. The word ZACCHEM, of which the import,
in the original Hebrew is Memory signifying, that the erection
of our tents in a proper manner, was the result of memory. The
emblem of this degree is the Dove, signifying that affection and
concord should bè a happy, united affection of family under one
common tent, living in amity and abiding in coocord.

J. 0.-My friend, patience is that calm and unruffled temper with
which a good man and a Z. bears the evils of Jjfe. Patience is
apt to be raoked by many among the more humble and obscure
virtues belonging chiefly to those who groan on a sick bed, or
who Ianguish in a prison, but in every circurnstance of life no
virtue is more important both to duty and happiness. It is not
confined to a situation of continued adversity. lt principally
indeed, regards the disagreeable circumstances which are apt to
occur. But in our present state, the occurrence of these is so fre­
quent, that in every condition of life, patience is incessantly
called for. Without it, prosperity cannot be enjoyed, any more
than adversity supported. If we would pass through the world
with tranquility and honor it must enter into the temper and
form part of the habit of the soul.

S. 0.-.My friend, this degree is only conferred, upon those Breth­
ren who are skilled and proficient in the necessary lrnowledge
required therein. Know ye, therfore, that formerly in the wander­
ings of our tribe throughout the hills and plains, it was the cus­
torn of our forefathers to erect two kinds of tents or tabernacles,
the first sought for the abode and shelter of themselves and fami-
1 ies, these of course were numbered by scores and hundreds; the
other was the tent of testimony, or the tabernacle of the Supreme
Master and Glorious Creator of the Universe, there our fore­
fathers performed, religious exercises, offered sacrifices to, and
worshipped the Supreme Master and Glorious Creator of the
Universe. This Tabernade was an oblong square, 30 cubits in
length, 10 in breadth and 10 in height, it was divided into two
parts. The first part was called the Zebulon or dwelling of
Righteousness and was 20 cubits long and 10 wide. In this were
placed the Golden Candlestick and Altar of Incense. The second

was the Zerahiah, or Holy of Holies, whose length, breadth and

height were 10 cubits or a perfect cube. The Zerahiah was divi­
ded from the Zebulon by a curtain or veil of very rich cloth which
hung from 4 pillars of sandalwood covered with plates of gold.
The Zerahiah was also closed in front by a veil hung on 5 pillars
of sandalwood, ovedaid with plates of gold, having bases of
brass. These boards were eight in number on the West but 20
in number on the North and South sides. They were all 1 O cubits
high and I Y2 cubits in breadth. They were also let into each
other by "2 tenons above and, 2 below, also by serrated edges
which correspond thus:-

And the whole of the Tabernacle was moveable and might be

taken down, these boards were carried in 2 boxes in which were
two mortice holes, by which they were joined together. To sup­
port them, each had 5 golden rings at proper distances, through
whicb were passed 5 poles of sandalwood, covered with plates
of gold which supported the whole. The Tabernacle had no
wind,ow; it was covered by several curtains; the fust on the inside
was the colour of hyacinth, striped with purple scadet and crim­
son; over this there were others of goat hair whicb hindered the
raio from penetrating and preserved the rich curtains. There were
no curtains in front but onJy those on the sides and bebind, so
that at the entrance of the Tabernacle, the first rich curt'ain I
hav:e before mentioned, might be seen, which enclosed the whole
front. Over these veils of goat hair were two others; one of
sheep skin, dyed red, the other of sheep skin dyed azure blue.
The entrance Iooked East; Serebiah West and, the two sides North
and South. This tabernacle was, as it were, the dwelling of the
Supreme Master and Glorious creator of the Universe, who was
considered as residing in the midst of the Camp, and round about
it were stationed the tents of the tribe.

considerable patience, that is the virtue which is inculcated in
this degree.
The Sign of this Degree is similar to that of the previous one,
with the exception that instead of the tips of the fingers just
touching one another, in this degree they are interlaced. Tuis
Sign wil! remind you as to the mortice work into which the
boards of the Tabernacle fitted. The words of this degree are 3

Brother Acolyte.
A.-My Bro., in this degree we teach obedience to our la�s, and
seek to instruct our younger brethren in the reasons why, in the
lower degrees, certain forms and ceremonies are used, and as the
oath or vow of the Zuzimite, is one of the most solemn things a
man can take, I wil! now ask our revered Vicar to instruct you
after the solemnity and, importance of an oath or jnvocation.
(The A. wil! here lead the Candidate to the Vicar and will say:-)
Revered Vicar ! our Bro. would learn from you the characteristics
and essentials and obligations of an oath or solemn vow.
V.-My Bro! an oath is a solemn invocation of a superior power,
supposed to be acquainted with all the secrets of our hearts, with
our inward thoughts as wel! as our outward actions, to witness
the truth of what we assert, and to inflict his vengeance upon
us if we assert what is not true, or promise what we do not mean
to perform. Almost all nations, whether savage or civilized,
whether enjoying the light of revelation or led only by the light
of reason, knowing the importance of truth, and willing to ob­
tain a barrier against falsehood, have had recourse to oaths and
obligations, by wh,ich they have endeavored to make men fearful
of utterng lies, under the dread of an avenging Deity.
Amongst Zuzimites, an oath is a solemn appeal for the truth
of ou.r assertions, the sincerity of our promises and the fidelity
of our engagemeots to one only God, the maker of heaven and
earth, who is everywhere present and s.ees, hears, and knows
whatever is said and clone or thought in any par:t of the world.
Such is the Being whorn Zuzimites wheo they take their oaths,
invoke to bear testimony to the truth of their words. and the in­
tegdty of their hearts. Surely theo, if oaths be a matter of so much
moment, it wel! behooves us not to treat them with levity, oor
even to take them without due consideration. In the present cor-

rupt state of society, oaths which are intended as corroborati.ng

virtue, are rendered necessary by vice. If all men were habitually
to speak the truth, there would be no need of oaths to deter them
from speaking falsehood. Oaths were designed to operate as a
restra.int upon falsebood, for they forcibly impress upon men' s
minds, the inviolable s;uictity of truth, and remind thero of the
punishment that awaits them if they speak lies. An oath does not
of itself constitute the truth of our assertions, or the sincerity of
our promises. lts use is to give us a soJemn premonition against
falsehood and insincerity, and to prevent us from malcing false
assertions and faJse promises, from a want of due consideration,
and thus it affords the strongest pJedge which we can give, of
our truth and sincerity. Whenever we are required to take an
oath, we ought not to do it, without due caution and deJibera­
tfon. We ought soberly to reflect on the infinite perfection of
Hiro by wbose name we swea.r, on His love of truth and His ut­
ter abborence of falsehood. To swear falseJy, is to be guilty of
treason against God to deny His knowledge or to de. fy His po­
wer. As false swearing is a crime of sucb magnitude whicb pro­
vokes God's wrath, and brings down his heaviest judgments
upon us, we ought to be very wary that we do not swear what is
not conformable to truth.; that we do not assert that whicb is not,
nor deoy that whicb is; that we do not deciare what we do not
know, nor promise what we do not roean to perform. Heoce,
when we take an oatb, we ought to take it in the plain sense of
the word, without any secret subterfuge, or mental reservatioo,
without any insidious ambiguities or sl'y prevarications; which
tend to d,efeat the obviouS' iotent of an oath or to elude the force
of its obiigations.
You will now be conducted by our Brotber A. to our Revered
H. P. who will impart to you th.e final teacbings. of this degree.

of the A. & H. Order of Zuzimites, Bro. Peter Di Murone. This

distinguished Bro., who was at that time a high dignitary in the
01ristian church, besides holding the highest position in our
Ancient Rite, saw with sorrow and d,ismay, that both in the
Christian Church, and as well, I regret to say, in some of the
then existing tents of our Order, a spirit of disobedience, and a
neglect of recognized Ancient and fundamental ceremonies and
principles had become habitual, he therefore determined if pos­
sible that he would remedy this deplorable state of affairs. He
therefore summoned the Executive Committee of the Grand, Ta­
bernacle together, and laid before them the evils that must
necessarily arise from the continuance of such carelessness and
indi.fference. The assembled Brethren at once saw the mag­
nitude of the evil and to endeavor to put an end to it at once in
the Zuzimite Order, they requested the M. W. G. M. and the
Senr. Deemster to at once prepare a suitable liturgy, divided in­
to two d.egrees to be conferred as foUows, the first upon all of­
ficers of Tents, in order to further impress upon their minds the
necessity of a strict obedience to ancient usage, and the thorough
hearings of the tead1ings of the Order; the second to be given
to Masters of Tents only.
This liturgy was accordingly prepared by the two brethren,
laid by them before the Executive Committee, and finally adop­
ted by the Grand Tabernacle, and has been so used, with but
sJight verba! alterations ever since. The original Password of
this Degree was ."PAX VOBISCUM", (Peace be with you.) but
this becoming known to the unenlightened, through the traitor­
ous conduct of an unworthy Brother at a Grand. Tabernacle held
in the year 1295 A. D., or 3295 A. Z ., the word was changed to
ZARAHEMiHA, which was the name of the Senior Deemster
who, in conjunction with our l\1.aster, Peter Di Murone, was the
author of the liturgy, and who succeeded Peter Di Murone as
M. W. G. M. of our Order.
The name of the Order is derived from our founder Peter
Di Murone, who was afterwards raised to the High dignity of

Pope of Rome , uoder the name of Celestine V. The scrupulous­

ness of our Bro. honor iotegrity and virtue , rend.ered our Bro.
extremely disagreeable to a degenerate and Licentious Clergy
aod he was poisoned by some scouodrels three months after his
electioo to the papacy. The sign of tbis degree is the placing
of the right hand on the heart, and making a bow as if in token
of obedience.
The Insignia of this degree is the blue scarf over the right
sboulder crossing the breast to the side.
The emblem of this degree is the roll of the law, which should
suggest to our minds our solemn obligation, and the necessity of
strict obedience to all laws, rites, and usages of the Order.
You will now be invested with our insignia and take your
place with your brethren.

M. H. E.-Most Hon. A ! Expound to our Hon. Beo. the doc­

trines and essentials of Sincerity.
M. H. A.-As the grace, or virtue of sincerity, respects the Supreme
Master and Great Creator of the Universe, it imports the sin­
rerity of our piety towards him; that we heartily beJieve, fear
and honor him; that the outward expressions of our piety and
obedience proceed from our inward apprehensions of, and. affec­
tion toward.s him, that we sincerely love the Supreme Master and
Grand Creator of the Universe, and his truth, and readily em­
brace it.
Sincerity with regard to men signifies a simplicity of mind
and manner in our behaviour and conversation; discovering it­
self in a constant plain honest and open carriage, free from craft
and cunning and all deceitful appearances in word or deed; in
a word, to speak as we think, to perform that which we promise,
to be in reality what we would. like to be thought to be. We
may be prudently silent, but we must not make a false show and
appear to be what we are not, either by word or action. Con­
trary to this virtue, is that complaisant conversation, that pre­
tended kindness and esteem for persons which one has not, or
to that degree the expressions import, this we call flattery which
is another sort of insincerity, because it abuses men into a vain
opinion of themselves and of the kindness of others towards
them. Indeed all hypocrisy and insincerity are mean in them­
selves, and are often used to the prejudice of others in their
rights and interests. As dissimulations is contrary to sincerity,
because it consists in a deceitful representation of our virtues,
qualities and character; so falsehood, fraud and perfidiousness
which men too often practice one towards another, is yet of a
more injurious and mischievious consequence; the former betrays
great vanity, the latter, gross iniquity.

M. H. E.-My Bro. ! On your initiation into the 1st degree how

were you prepared?
Cand.-1 was bereft of all metals and metallic substances, stripped
of my shoes and stockings, blinctfolded and both my arms and
breast laid bare.
M. H. E.-Even as you were bereft of all metals and metallic sub­
stances, to show that the power of wealth would not cause you
to be admitted into the Order, you.r feet were bare to remind you
of the command of the Supreme Master and Grand Creator of
the Universe, to Moses, that he take off his shoes for where he
stood was Holy ground. Both your breasts were laid bare, to
prove that though naked and penniless if you were an honorahle
man, with purity of heart, though all the rest of the world re­
jected, you, the order would receive you ; blindfolded, to show
that you were in darkness as to the secrets of our Order.
Cand.-1 stated in my examination in the 2nd degree, that 12
times have 12 moons appeared since my birth, what is the import
of this?
M.H.E.-To remind you of the 12 months of the year, the 12 signs
of the Zodiac, the 12 tribes of Israel. It also signified the Unity
of God an d the duality of human beiogs, who require the two
forms, male and fernale to make ,the race complete. l =God,
2=man and woman.
M. H. E.-How were you received at the door of the Tent?

ing at all times and all seasons to bear arms and forfeit (if neces­
sary) bis life in the defence of the Order.

be ready to shed even your life's blo_od in defence of the Order.

J. L.-My brother, in this degree we teach the virtue of benefi- .
cence, which 111ay be defined as active goodness, or the practice
of good. Every benevolent action .is in some respects its own re­
ward. It is always accompanied. by a reasonable and mora[ satis­
faction. Every instance of victory over our more unsocial feelings
and desires is associated with a degree of delight, more heartfelt

and more pure than any other victory. lt diffuses over us the
sweet complacency of a virtuous self approbation, wbich is greatly
superior to any of the gross enjoyments of selfishness. The more
studiously we consider the frame of our nature, the constitution
of the world, and even the present tendencies of actions, the more
we shaU find that we have no greater interest in anytbing than
in the pursuit of a disinterested beneficence. Do we desird
pleasure? What do we desire more? Toen let me ask what can
afford pleasure so pure, sa heavenly as the practice of beneficence?
Much do they mistake the nature of pleasure who place it in
merely personal enjoyments.
l. C.-My brother, our J. L. js right and you will find that those
habits, passions and propensities of which are most hurtful to
the peace and happiness of Society, are, at the same time, most
adverse to our peace and happiness.
The greatest part of human misery may be ascribed to the
operations of pride, envy, malice, intemperance, avarice and in­
justice. Yet these are at the same time the most rnischievous
to the indivjdual in whom they prevail. They harass his quiet,
vex hun with perpetual solicitude, waste bis mind with care,
and his heart with anguisb. Tbus tbose passions, affections, and
pursuits which have the strongest tendency to eender us either
unable or unwilliog to promote the interest of ethers, most for­
cibly withdraw our attention from our greatest interest.
S. L.-The fust step towards doiog good is to abstain from doing
evil. To this pitch we can surely attain. If we cannot practice a
disinterested benevoleoce, we can at least abstain from crueJty,
injustice and oppressioo. Bub from this negative state of charity
w:hich consists in doiog no ill toward.s otbers, we shall if we only
cultivate those principles of good-will and those sensations of
sympathy, which are engrafted in our nature, gradually rise to
a higher degree of positive beneliceoce.
I. P. C.-}4y brother, consider, can that wealth, that honor, those
temporal distinctions or those corpora! (corporeal? -W. L. C.)

progency of an irrational self love, are so anxious to obtain, in

any degree equal the heartfelt satisfaction of benefi.cence? A
disinterested beneficence d:iffuses over the whole sensitive frame
of a man sensations of tranquil unalloyed pleasure, not only in
the act but in the reco!lectjon. As far as happiness exists in an
agreeable state of the sensations, beneficences will be experi­
enced by all who practice it, to be the d.irect road to the attainment
of the purest felicity.
I.C.-My brother, you have listened to the teachings of this degree,
ponder them well and act in harmony with its precepts.
This degree has an emblem, a sign, a password, and a watchword,
which I will now instruct you in.
The emblem of this degree is the Sun, typical of the bounteous
beneficence of the great Creator and Supreme Master of the
Universe, who causes it daily to shine forth in the glorious firma­
ment and disperse warmth and light alike upon the just and
unjust, the rich and. the poor, the saint and the sinner, the mon­
arch and the beggar.
The jewel of this degree is the blazing sun which is emblematical
of the same.
The sign of this degree is the placing of the left hand with the
palm extended at right angles aaoss the forehead as if to shade
the eyes from the effulgence and radiant light of the orb of the
day.
The password of this degree is "Haiarz", pronounced "Ha-i-arz",
which is a curtailment and the Zuzimitical mode of pronouncing
the Hebrew word., Zezraiah, signifying the solar rays, or the
brightness of the Great Creator and Supreme Master of the
Universe, physically symbolized.
The test and watchword is laccaz, which is the Hebrew word
signifying pure or justified.
The last word is given only as follows :-
The person testing advances with the seven steps of a Neophite
Zuzimite, raises his sword and says:- "I am convinced." The

person tested then advances with the five steps of a Mark Master
Zuzimite, raises his sword and says :- "Cautious are Zuz.imites,"
Each brother sheathes bis sword anc\ gives to each other the sign
of this degree simultaneously, and maintaining the sign, extend
to each other the right hand giving the 3 ° grip. The challenger
says, "Haiarz'', the other responding, "Iaccaz." It will be noticed
that the jnitials of the two sentences if reversed make up the
word "laccaz."
The proper number of raps to be given at each door is four dis­
tinct, and of equal f�rce.
The distinctive insignia of this degree is the sword with which
you wil! now be girded. In the future you wil! perhaps find it
necessary to use it, but at present it will be sufficient for me to
say that as a Knight of Zered, you are expected never to draw
it without reason, or sheath it without honour. Grasp its hüt in
faith, d,raw it in hope, and use it with �lour combined with
mercy, clemency and justice.

But little information regarding the Ancient Order of Zuzi
m.ites is available, as the Order oever attaine d the status of a worl.::­
iog Rite. Chjefly through the efforts of the late John Yarker, one
or two "teots" were establisbed, but these only existed for a brief
period. Tent No. 1 was located in Liverpool, and "The Kneph"
records a Henry K.assack as about to form aoother in Ramsey on
the Isle of Man, England.
"The Kneph," Vol. 1, No. 4, April, 1881, gives an account of
the orgaruzation of the Order, together with list of oflicers etc.,
with the statement that "The Kneph" had been designated as the
official organ of the Grand Tabernacle. W. H. Quilliam and F. W.
Vaughan, of 28 Church St., Liverpool, Eogiand, are listed as Grand
Master and Grand Recorder, respectively.
In Vol. 1, No. 6 of the same magazine there is a review of
"A. Brief Exposition of the History, Aims, Objects and Usages
of the A.ncient Order of Zuzi.mites," by Bro. W. H. Quilliam,
M. W. G .M. (England), from whjch the following information
is taken.
The A.ncient Order of Zuzimites is a secret society analagous
to but in no wise antagonistic to the Masonjc Order, and the

various rites m connection therewith. Is supposed to have been

founded in the early part of the second century (Anno Mundi).
Authentic chronides mention the Zuzimites in the year of the
world 2079 (1918 years before the Christian era) as being "a
people great and many."
The derivation of the word tn the original Hebrew signifies
splendor and beauty.
The Order possesses twenty-one recogoised degrees; and
a few unimportant side rites which are now almost obsolete.
The twenty-one recognised degrees are sub-d�vided into
various series, with distinctive names, thus the first three de­
grees-Neophyte, Graduate and Fellow-constitute Zuzimitism
proper, and, as in Masonry when a brother bas taken the third
degree, he need progress no further should he not be so dis­
posed; then being entitled to all the ordinary privilges of mem·
bership.
The next series is termed Mark Zuzimitism and: contains
two degrees.
The members of the third series are known as Celestine
Zuzimites. This series likewise consists of two degrees, for the
fust of which officers of a subordinate Tent are only eligible,
and the second degree thereof only being conferred on Wor­
shipful Masters.
The other series have each their own distinctive names,
as Arch Zuzimites, Acetasite, Cabbalite and Aramite Zuzimites,
and fmally Zam Zuzimites.
These superior degrees were not at first a part of the
Rite; but they have at divers times, at first through usage,
ancl .finally by resolutions of the Grand Tabernacle become
recognised and acknowledged as part of the system of the
Order. For instance, the Celestine Degrees were the invention
of one Peter DiMurone, who it is claimed was M. W. G. M.
of the Order in the thirteenth century, and who was after-

wards raised to the dignity of Pope of Rome under the title

of Celestine V. It was not until the year 1295 A. D. that
the Grand Tabemacle recognised the degrees as a part of the
system. Similar instances might be given with reference to the
other d�grees hut this one will suffi.ce.
Thus it will be seen that the h.istory of the Order is one
of which any organization might be deservedly proud, a chron­
icle that can be equalled by few, if by any other secret society
in existence, and most certainly excelled by none.
The principal objects of the society are the creation and
perpetuation of an international fraternity and universa! brother­
hood without distinotion of race, color or creed; and, the organi­
zation, being of the most comprehensive character, appeals most
powerfully to the admirers of the moral virtues and the lovers
of the mysterious. When we mention <that the virtues of Friend­
ship, Truth, Love, Purity, Fjdelity, Charity, Hurnility and Justice
are inculcated as some of the cardinal principles of the Order,
we are sure none can be but assured of the comprehensiveness
and purity of its charaoter.
The government of the Order is perhaps as perfect (jf not
more so) as than that of any similar organisation in existence,
and consists of (a) subordinate or foundation Tents, or local
societies; (b) Encampments, Chapters and Courts, which are
rcally simply bodjes for conferring certain degrees; ( c) Grand
Tabemacles or Provincial goveroing bodies; ( d) National Con­
claves, and (e) an International Council, known as the most
Right Worshipful Grand Sovereign Council of the World, and
which is the Supreme Court and fountain head of the Order
throughout the globe.
The teachings of the ord$?r are highy symbol;ical, and the
private work is extremely useful and comprehensive, while the
liturgy abounds with bcautiful and enlightened sentiments.
Tents of the Order may be formed on the petition of seven
or more persons of the male sex over 21 years of age, and, on

payment of the Charter Fee to the Grand Tabernacle, will be

INTRODUCTORY
Tuis degree, one of the series of the Adoptive Rite, is dis­
tinguished as a compliment to all worthy active members of a Chap­
ter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
The degree should be conferred within the Chapter room of
the �tem Star.
An organization of th.is degree is styled a Pa/ace. It consists
of fifteen officers, and as many private members, ladies and gentle­
men, as may be convenient.
