In a first for Skytrans, Cairns and the Whitsunday region a new service connecting Tropical North Queensland to the Whitsundays islands will take-off today.

The new services will operate five times per week and increase opportunities for Far Northerners to travel to the Whitsunday Islands and further expand options for intrastate travel.

For the first time, Skytrans will operate return flights between Cairns-Whitsunday Coast Airport-Rockhampton. These services will depart 5 times per week and commence on 13th September. 

The service will use the company’s Dash 8-100 aircraft, which has a capacity of up to 36 passengers.  Skytrans Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne said “the Queensland owned company was proud to be expanding its services”

“We’re a Queensland owned company and it’s fantastic that we are flying to even more destinations across our great State,” Mr Milne said. 

“The big winners will be locals who live in Cairns, the Whitsunday region and Rockhampton because they will have additional choice and we are committed to delivering the best service possible for these local communities,” Mr Milne said. 

CQUniversity’s Aviation training has soared to new heights in North Queensland, with the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding to deliver a graduate pilot pathway program into Skytrans Airlines through Cleveland Bay Aviation.

This will be the second graduate pilot pathway program for CQUniversity, with a similar arrangement between CQUni, Virgin Airlines and Hinterland Aviation forged in 2019.

The COVID–19 vaccination rollout across the vast and remote reaches of the Torres Strait and Cape York Peninsula just got a lot easier thanks to the generosity of regional airline Skytrans.

Cairns-based Skytrans has committed to supporting the vaccination rollout by transporting vaccines and vaccination supplies for free across the region to all locations serviced by the airline on Cape York, the Northern Peninsula Area and the Torres Strait.

 The Local Fare Scheme (Scheme) is a scheme under which Translink, part of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is funding participating airline operators to provide discounted airfares to Eligible Residents in the Cape York, Gulf of Carpentaria and Torres Strait regions, with the discount being up to $400 off for a return fare. 

The Scheme originally commenced on 1 July 2015 but has been extended until 30 June 2021 

Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) and Skytrans launched a Queensland wide competition in their search for an authentic Indigenous artwork that will feature prominently in the airlines’ new corporate uniform.

Rockhampton artist Annie Abednego Gela’s artwork entitled, LAK PARU KWINZLAN (The Face of Queensland) was selected by judges CIAF Artistic Director Janina Harding and Skytrans CEO Michael Thinee from among 27 entries. Ms Abednego Gela’s artwork will be unveiled in a capsule collection that is presented as part of this year’s CIAF fashion performance at Tanks Arts Centre. Added to this, the winning and highly commended art works will be on display at the Art Fair in Shed 3 of Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. Skytrans’ Uniform Design Art Prize rewards the winning artist an acquisitive prize of $4000 cash (plus licencing fee) as well as return flights to attend CIAF’s 10th anniversary event opening night event.
