Nexthink Library - replacing a ruby on rails application with Scala and SprayMatthew Farwell
Applications without tests (legacy applications) present particular problems to developers when changes are required. Unless the change is very small, they require a lot of manual testing. This is even more true when we wish to completely replace such an application. At Nexthink, we replaced a legacy Ruby on Rails application with a web application written using Spray and Slick. There were two parts, a Rest API, accessed from lots of different version of our products, and an administration web interface to allow editing of the data. In replacing this application, we had to ensure that the new implementation returned exactly the same answers to requests as the old application for the same input criteria, without knowing in advance what the requests were. This presentation shows how a combination of technologies was used to achieve this goal, including: spray - for the reactive http container proxy - the new application was used as a proxy to the old application, and the results were compared with the new application (in production) scalacheck - to generate structured queries on the old and new application, for testing gatling - for performance tests This presentation covers both how the replacement was done, to ensure the minimum number of bugs in production, along with our subsequent experience in production.

In this talk, we focus on addressing the high latency issues associated with S3 storage in stream processing systems that employ a decoupled compute and storage architecture. We delve into the root causes of latency in this context and explore various techniques to minimize the impact of S3 latency on stream processing performance. Our proposed approach is to implement a tiered storage mechanism that leverages a blend of high-performance and low-cost storage tiers to reduce data movement between the compute and storage layers while maintaining efficient processing.
Throughout the talk, we will present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in mitigating the impact of S3 latency on stream processing. Quality Patents: Patents That Stand the Test of TimeAurora Consulting
Is your patent a vanity piece of paper for your office wall? Or is it a reliable, defendable, assertable, property right? The difference is often quality.
Is your patent simply a transactional cost and a large pile of legal bills for your startup? Or is it a leverageable asset worthy of attracting precious investment dollars, worth its cost in multiples of valuation? The difference is often quality.
Is your patent application only good enough to get through the examination process? 2. CURRENT STATE
Teams still prefer to use Java for API tests.
Manipulation and comparison of large and complex JSON is not easy
using Java.
Dependent on Java Objects for building and validating data-payloads.
Teams still struggle with parallel tests executions as its not provided
inbuilt.
More lines of code, more maintenance.
Non-programmers feels difficulty and hence, separate functional and
automation testing teams in organizations.
3. USING KARATE DSL
Plain-text, super-readable and maintainable API test scripts.
Inbuilt powerful and flexible JSON and XML assertions capability( deep-
equals).
‘smart compare’ of two JSONs or XMLs.
No Java beans or helper code to represent payloads and responses.

First create reusable features which performs GET, POST, PUT and DELETE actions and use
them wherever possible.
Create DBUtils for data retrieval and manipulation like readRow, readRows, updateRows,
deleteRows etc.
Data cleanup before/after every scenario/feature execution.
Use CSV if parameterized Examples test data is large.
Use Assert capabilities of Karate (match == , match contains, match contains deep etc.)
Keep scenarios independent if possible.
Try running scenarios in parallel from the beginning so that scenarios can be fixed to keep
independent.
Differentiate scenario by tags (@smoke, @regression etc) and trigger them accordingly.
