Perhaps the greatest catcher ever, Yogi Berra played in 15 All-Star games, was named the AL MVP 3 times, won 10 World Series Championships as a player and another 3 as a coach. Not too shabby.

Set: 1986-87 Fleer (Rate)

Card: #57 Michael Jordan

This was the first widely distributed Michael Jordan card. It's also one of the most counterfeited cards and was actually named #1 this month in Beckett magazine in their list of the 50 Greatest Basketball Cards of All Time.

Card: #156 Joe Montana

Not the best picture of Joe Montana. He looks like he has indigestion. We’ll spare you the joke about eating up defenses. 4-time Super Bowl winner, 3-time Super Bowl MVP, perhaps the best ever.

Card: #65 Jim Plunkett

Heisman trophy winner, 1st overall pick, NFL Rookie of the Year, Jim Plunkett started off his NFL career with lots of promise, but injuries and interceptions later, he found himself as a backup in Oakland. Then the starter got hurt and Plunkett led the Raiders all the way to a Super Bowl victory, picking up MVP honors. Card: #388 Andre Reed

Andre Reed played 15 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, going to seven Pro Bowls, and was an instrumental part of the Bills teams that appeared in four straight Super Bowls. Although he's been eligible for the Hall of Fame, he's yet to make it, but will undoubtedly be selected one day as his numbers are better than Michael Irvin, who was recently inducted.

Card: #99 Byron Scott

Byron Scott was an integral part of the Lakers "Showtime" teams of the '80s, winning 3 championships. Although he was never selected to play in an All-Star game, this year he'll be coaching the Western squad after leading the New Orleans Hornets to a great first half of the season.

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Set: 1949 Bowman (Rate)

Card: #100 Gil Hodges

The Random Card Generator has a thing for Bowman. That's six Bowman cards in a row now. Gil Hodges was an excellent player. He was second only to his teammate Duke Snider in homeruns and RBI's during the 1950's. On the defensive side, he was the winner of the first three Golden Glove Awards. Later on in his career, he managed the New York Mets to a World Series win in 1969. He died of an untimely heart attack at the age of 47, and unfortunately, has not made it to Cooperstown.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Set: 1954 Bowman (Rate)

Card: #66 Ted Williams

This card comes a year after which Ted Williams was flying combat missions in Korea. It ran a short print as Williams signed an exclusive contract with Topps. Bowman pulled the card and replaced it with one of Jimmy Piersall.
