CHS hosts World Languages Recognition Night

By

Over 150 Canton High School students were recently honored at the 2024 World Languages Recognition Night. Students from grades 9-12 received awards for excellence in their studies of French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

“In addition to rewarding students who show particular excellence in a world language, we also recognize students who show tremendous growth in the language they are taking,” said Heidi Olson, Canton’s PreK-12 World Languages Department coordinator. “This growth leads to increased proficiency, effort, and enthusiasm for the language.”

Several students were recognized for proficiency in multiple languages — Sonia Le for French and Japanese, Dan Krasylnykov for Russian and Spanish, Joemaelle Celestin for French and Haitian Creole, and Firma Tamara Pierre for French, Haitian Creole, and Spanish.

Fifteen members of the senior class were recognized with the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy, which appears on their transcript or diploma. To qualify, students must demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other language. Five of the 15 students — Hennessey Castillo-Lopez, Julia Cummings, Hannah Isaac, Tara Geoghan, and Mercia Kolokithas — received the Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction. Also receiving the Seal of Biliteracy were Celestin, Krasylnykov, Aadya Deshmukh, Annika Falcucci, Dominic Gray, Aya Kayali, Lucas Massih, Bradley Perlman, Sofia Santos, and Fatima Sidibay.

Four students received Mass. Foreign Language Association (MAFLA) awards: Cummings for AP French, Celestin for German 4, Gavin Demanche for AP Spanish, and Rachel Pirrera, who received the association’s leadership award for her work on Canton High School’s World Languages Committee and excellence in Spanish.

Nine students who study French received awards granted through a national French contest known as Le Grand Concours sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Bailey Ezekial and Elim Tai received the Certificat de Mérite, and Emma Bouwmeester, Christopher Rodriguez, and Soley Rodriguez were awarded honorable mentions. Maite Iriarte was honored with the Lauréat National Silver level award, and Madalyn Sheehan, Tracy Sonkarkay, and Paul Zamy received Lauréat National Bronze level awards.

“We congratulate all of the recipients for their success and diligence in their studies,” said CHS Principal Jeffrey Sperling. “We are proud to offer a wide level of language instruction, which includes the study of various cultures as well. I have no doubt the World Languages Department is preparing our students for the world that awaits beyond Canton High School.”
