Are you still looking for a Halloween costume? If sexy Bernie Sanders isn’t doing it for you, here’s a strong contender from Grimes, who apparently spent the weekend trolling paparazzi with a Dungeons and Dragons costume and a prop copy of The Communist Manifesto. Are you spooked yet? Did I mention that she is also still living with Elon Musk, her maybe-ex and also a man who was fined by the SEC for making a 4/20 joke?
Yes, Grimes stepped out this weekend in a space-y Lord of the Rings getup that appears to be made of acid-dyed denim. She brought with her a copy of Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto and assumed a few poses pretending to read the book, resulting in this video, which I refuse to believe is real. After the headlines made their rounds (including the New York Post’s: “Grimes seen reading Karl Marx following split with world’s richest man Elon Musk”), the singer made her way to Instagram to clarify that this is all a prank and also to share a few more of her opinions about communism.
Elaborating on some difficult-to-follow thoughts she divulged in June regarding communism and AI, Grimes wrote that she is not a communist but instead “more interested in a radical decentralized ubi,” which she believes “could potentially be achieved thru crypto and gaming.” Maybe that last part explains the outfit?
“Regardless,” she continued, “my opinions on politics are difficult to describe because the systems that inspire me the most have not been implemented.” For what it’s worth, it sounds like she’s read at least some Marx, which she notes contains “some very smart ideas.”
And though, just a week ago, Grimes appeared to confirm her breakup by citing her desire to start a “lesbian space commune,” she has now clarified that she is “still living with e.” In other words, it’s unclear whether they have actually severed ties, or whether reality exists at all.
This is all deeply haunting. Is this entire breakup a simulation? Was the Grimes that walked down the streets of L.A. in an acid-dyed Ringwraith outfit just … a holograph? While Grimes, Elon, and “Page Six” work all this out, I’ll be hunting down this edition of The Communist Manifesto for my Halloween costume.
