Eugene-Springfield ranked 85th in list of metro performance

Eugene-Springfield has made its way onto another list, but this time it isn't anywhere near the top.

The Milken Institute, in its annual ranking of the nation's 200 best-performing big metro areas, placed Eugene-Springfield 85th. The California-based group's list measures where jobs are being created, economies are growing and businesses are thriving.

Portland/Vancouver ranked 141, and Salem ranked 133. The top metro area nationwide was Fayetteville, Ark., followed by Las Vegas, Nev. Gary, Ind., ranked last.

The best-performing cities weren't overly dependent on high-tech industries, and had stable employers such as hospitals and government, the survey found.

Among the 96 small cities surveyed, Medford ranked 31st. The top was Iowa City, Iowa.
