Football: Wales skipper Speed injured.

Byline: Mark Bloom

WALES captain Gary Speed could miss the start of Premiership after a training accident on Saturday, writes Mark Bloom. The Newcastle United star has damaged his ankle ligaments and is likely to miss the opening game of the season against West Ham United next Monday.

``I'm not travelling with the club to Bosnia for the Champions League game today and I'm out for Wales friendly against Croatia in a couple of weeks time, due to Newcastle's fixture list,'' said Speed.

``But I'm hopeful of being fit in a week or two, and I will definitely be okay for Wales opening game against Finland on September 7.''
