ISLAMABAD - At least five people were killed and 20 injured when a passenger train derailed Monday in southwestern Pakistan following an explosion, railway officials said.

The blast occurred about 200 kilometers east of Quetta, capital of restive Balochistan province, as the Quetta-bound express train from Rawalpindi was passing through the province's Dera Murad Jamali district.

TOKYO - Japan's supermarket sales eked out a 0.4 percent gain in September from a year before on a same-store basis, the second straight month of increase, an industry body said Monday.

Total sales at 8,188 stores operated by 58 chains came to 1,000.07 billion yen, according to the Japan Chain Stores Association.

---------- Tokyo stocks end higher on hopes for strong earnings

TOKYO - Tokyo stocks ended higher Monday, underpinned by expectations for robust Japanese corporate earnings and solid Asian shares.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average closed up 132.03 points, or 0.91 percent, from Friday at 14,693.57, the highest closing mark since Sept. 27. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 6.84 points, or 0.57 percent, at 1,212.36.

---------- Japanese scientist Kuroda picked for high-level U.N. board

TOKYO - Japanese scientist Reiko Kuroda has been appointed to the new United Nations Scientific Advisory Board, tasked with providing executive-level science policy advice to the organization, she said Monday.

"I was surprised, wondering why I was (chosen)," Kuroda, 66, told a news conference at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, vowing to maintain a balance between her work for the board and her own research.

---------- 4-yr term sought for 2 daughters over 2011 death of Amagasaki woman

KOBE - Prosecutors sought four-year prison terms Monday for two women suspected of involvement in the killing of their 66-year-old mother, whose corpse was found in a drum in 2011, in a serial murder case in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture.

In the trial at the Kobe District Court, Kazuko Oe's daughters Kae, 45, and Yumi, 42, are charged with injury resulting in death for repeatedly assaulting their mother after confining her in an apartment between July and September 2011 on the orders of alleged ringleader Miyoko Sumida.
