Letter: Directive wasn't for privatisation.

Byline: Mark Andrews

MRS D E Coombes Herridge asks how many readers know what the European Directive 97/67/EC stands for.

She then proceeds to give her version that it stands for Post Office privatisation and if the British Government does not carry it out it will be fined by the European Court of Justice.

This is certainly not the case. The Directive which has been accepted by Britain and the other members of the European Union stands for the opening up of competition in postal services by other operators if they prove to be competent and maintain at least the same standards as the existing postal services. It certainly does not stand for the privatisation of the Post Office.
