North East football fans will pay more than double for the price of a pint during Euro 2024 compared to the 2000 tournament The Northern Echo can reveal.

Data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed that the price of a pint of lager at the start of Euro 2024 is currently around £4.75.

Comparatively, during England's exit at the group stage at Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands, the price of a pint was a much lower £2.

England's route to the final in 2021 was accompanied by a £3.87 pint, meaning that football fans are paying more than 20% more for their lager than the last time the beer gardens were graced for a summer men's football tournament.

When England were embarrassed by minnows Iceland in 2016 leading to Roy Hodgson's departure as national team boss, a pint at the pub to drown the sorrows would have set the average punter back £3.48.

While future England top goalscorer Wayne Rooney's emergence at Euro 2004 was accompanied by a pint costing £2.33.

England are the bookies' favourites to win the Euros this year in Germany, despite the fact that the country has not won the competition before.

Gareth Southgate's side kick off their group stage with a game against Serbia on June 16.

This is followed by matches against Denmark and Slovenia on June 20 and 25 respectively.
