In 1513 (or possibly on September 27) Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama to reach the Pacific Ocean, which he claimed for Spain. In January 1519 he was beheaded for treason; in 1690 the first multi-page newspaper in America, Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick, was published in Boston. It was also the final edition, as the paper was promptly banned by the colonial government; in 1926 the international Convention to Suppress the Slave Trade and Slavery was signed, to come into force on March 9, 1927. It was created under the auspices of the League of Nations; in 1939 Warsaw was blitzed by the Luftwaffe in the first significant city bombing of the Second World War. The Polish capital was surrendered to the Germans two days later; in 1979 Question Time was first broadcast on the BBC. There have been four hosts: Sir Robin Day (1979-89), Peter Sissons (1989-93), David Dimbleby (1994-2018) and Fiona Bruce.

Grey squirrels have one of British fauna’s most comic sounding vocalisations. The first time you hear their rasping, husky bark you could be forgiven for thinking you were listening to Donald Duck in a particularly bad mood. This scolding, repetitive husk-husk-quaaa is their alarm call, and will be used when a threat has been seen, which in their native range of the United States will include bobcats, raccoons, coyotes and barred owls. In the UK, this alarm call is usually reserved for humans, feral cats, foxes and goshawks. Grey squirrels flap their tails to emphasise their warning; in fact, research has indicated that urban squirrels are increasingly relying on tail waving alone to warn each other of danger.
