Ella Adler was by all accounts an exceptional 15-year-old: a stellar student, an active member of her synagogue congregation and an accomplished ballerina bound for the professional stage.

Her life was cut tragically short on Saturday, May 11, the day before Mother’s Day in the US, on a boating trip off northern Florida. She was struck by a boat moments after falling off her wakeboard.

Ella, whose grandfather is Michael Adler, the American ambassador to Belgium, died instantly. A dozen of her friends watched in horror from their boat as the waves off Nixon Beach, Miami-Dade County, turned red with blood — and the vessel that struck her sped away.
